Tavertet combines striking changes in elevation with a village center whose houses date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The Cingles de Tavertet rise 400 meters above the Sau Reservoir; their sheer cliffs are 200 meters high. Nature and architectural history thus define two different sides of the village.

Rocky Landscapes Around the Sau Reservoir

The Salts de l’Avenc are formed by the Avellanosa and Abeurador streams at the foot of the Mas l’Avenc farmhouse. They plunge 200 meters into the Sau Valley. The drop remains 200 meters, while the amount of water in the Salts de l’Avenc varies with the season.

From the Mirador pla del Castell, the view stretches across the Sau Reservoir, the Guilleries, and Montseny. The viewpoint is a 30-minute walk from Tavertet. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking them before setting out.

The cliffs of l’Avenc de Tavertet offer a different view: from there, you can look out over the Sau Valley and the Osona plain; they also preserve the landscapes of the high plateaus. The course of the Ter also shapes the landscape in the Tavertet area, forming high cliffs before flowing into the beginning of the Sau Reservoir.

The Pla del Castell offers far-reaching views; from l’Avenc, you can look out over the Sau Valley and the Osona plain. The amount of water at the Salts de l’Avenc varies with the season.

Hiking, mountain biking, and named destinations

From Tavertet, you can go hiking or take mountain-biking trips. Routes lead to the Sau Reservoir and other natural landscapes; the GR 2 is also part of Tavertet’s active tourism offering. When hiking, you travel on foot; mountain-biking trips take you through the surrounding area by mountain bike.

A marked hiking trail leads from Tavertet to Puig de la Força. From there, you can see the Salt de Tirabous; this waterfall is also visible from the Pla del Castell. Another route runs from Tavertet along the cliff to the Mirador pla del Castell.

Village History and Prehistoric Heritage

Tavertet’s village center preserves forty houses built between the 17th and 18th centuries. The entire village is designated a Bé d’Interès Cultural.

The Dolmen de Sant Corneli lies right next to the Sant Corneli chapel. It consists of a square chamber with a stone slab as an entrance, as well as a corridor similar to the chamber. If you are interested in prehistoric structures, the dolmen offers a distinct cultural attraction alongside the historic village center.
