Vacarisses is located in the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. El Castell, local festival traditions and trails through Mediterranean landscapes are among the defining features of the town. When planning your trip, you can decide in advance whether to focus on architecture and culture or on nature and specific sections of trail.
El Castell: Heritage with Modern-Day Uses
El Castell is an emblematic heritage building with a history dating back to the 10th century. Today, the Biblioteca municipal El Castell occupies the first and second floors. The ground floor houses the large Sala dels Cups, a space for conferences, exhibitions and concerts. Here, historical significance and present-day public uses come together in the same building.
The information point at the Biblioteca El Castell provides information about the nature park, tourism in Vacarisses and local businesses. It also hosts art exhibitions, as well as exhibitions about the history of the municipality and its surroundings. If you would like to learn about local culture while finding your bearings, you can do both at this cultural venue.
Architecture and Places in the l’Obac Area
The parish church of Sant Pere de Vacarisses is neoclassical. Its single-nave layout, transept and side chapels give its architecture a distinctive form that goes beyond the stylistic label alone. The historic Torrota also defines the area’s heritage: its upright structure and rounded forms seem to watch over Vacarisses from its lookout point.
Casa Nova de l’Obac currently houses exhibitions about the nature park, an information point and meeting rooms. The grounds around the house include nature park facilities and Mediterranean holm oak woodland. At Casa Vella de l’Obac, an information board provides orientation about the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i Serra de l’Obac.
The Molà de can Còdol offers another glimpse into the area’s architectural heritage. The grain mill lies beside the Riera de can Còdol, also known as the Riera de Sanana, about 200 metres from the Can Còdol farmhouse, and retains almost all of its characteristic features.
Trail Sections and Views
The SL-C 51 La Torrota de Vacarisses trail starts at Plaça de Joan Bayà . It runs mostly through Mediterranean woodland, with panoramic views from the ridge. The historic Camà Romeu highlights the connection to Montserrat: the route once led there from Barcelona and Terrassa and is now marked in yellow and red as the GR 96.
A section of the Camà Romeu about 500 metres long, between Can Serra and the Palà /Xoles residential area, has benches and offers direct views of Montserrat. On the SL-C 63 La font de la Portella trail, a 720-metre section between Casa Nova de l’Obac and Obac Vell is described as partially accessible to people with reduced mobility. This section takes approximately 20 minutes. The distance and time refer to this section, not to a complete hike.
Nature and a Rest Stop at Font de l’Orpina
There is a small picnic area beside the spring at Font de l’Orpina. A waterfall, created during construction of the trail, is also located there. The plants described include aquatic plants, spring orchids, ferns, mosses and lichens. This makes the area a specific place to take a break amid diverse vegetation, without requiring a longer route.
Festivals and Local Cheese-Making Tradition
The Festa Major of Vacarisses takes place on the first weekend of August. The Festa Major Petita is celebrated around 26 May for the local feast day of Sant Felip Neri; the Baixada de la Vaca is also part of the festival. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the latest dates when making your plans.
Local food culture includes Formatgeria La Frasera, which makes artisan goat’s cheese using traditional methods. A visit includes a walk around the grounds and the opportunity to see the goat herd. Visits are subject to a fee, and advance reservations are required. Confirm availability and conditions before travelling.
