Olesa De Bonesvalls brings together different themes for exploration: geological features in the Garraf and buildings with a long history. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on landscape and geology or on the church and hospital. The individual sites and visitor options offer concrete starting points.

Landscape and Geology in the Garraf

Part of the municipality of Olesa De Bonesvalls lies within Parc del Garraf. Avenc de l'Esquerrà is located both in Parc del Garraf and within the municipality. It is considered the deepest cave in the Massís del Garraf.

Another geological feature is Pont Natural de l'Arcada: a rock arch from the Cretaceous period, about four metres high and about seven metres wide. Its approximate dimensions convey its shape, while its age places it in context. Among the plants that grow in the surrounding area are holm oaks, Aleppo pines, asparagus plants, blackberries, and wild olive trees. Thus, the picture of Pont Natural includes not only the rock arch but also the plants around it.

Hospital and Church: Different Eras

Hospital de Cervelló is a complex enclosed by a wall. It includes the hospital building, a keep, the chapel of Santa Maria de l'Anunciata, as well as other annexes and outbuildings. Its history began in 1262: Guillem de Cervelló founded the hospital to receive pilgrims travelling along the old road from Barcelona to Vilafranca del Penedès. Architecturally, the building dates to the transition from Romanesque to Gothic; it underwent extensive alterations in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its founding and later alterations mark different phases in its history.

Església de Sant Joan can also be placed in context through several dates. A parish document mentioned it in 1183. The church dating from 1777 is Neoclassical, though its origins go back to the Romanesque period. Inside are a Baroque altarpiece and predominantly Neoclassical altarpieces. The single Baroque altarpiece and the larger group of Neoclassical pieces represent two distinct styles in the church's furnishings.

Visits and Getting Oriented

The Punt d'Informació Turística d'Olesa de Bonesvalls is located at Plaça de la Creu d'Olesa. There, you can book and arrange visits to Hospital de Cervelló and the Centre de Documentació i Interpretació d'Espeleologia. The Centre offers guided tours of its permanent exhibition and an audiovisual presentation. Visiting hours of 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. are scheduled for weekends and public holidays; check before your visit whether these hours apply.

Another way to discover the area and its cultural heritage is to join the monthly excursions organised by Grup de Recerca Olesa Rural. They focus on exploring Olesa de Bonesvalls and its cultural heritage. Along with the visits to the hospital and the Centre, the excursions offer different starting points for planning: historic buildings, a speleology exhibition, or a broader look at the area and its cultural heritage.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When looking for a hotel in Olesa De Bonesvalls, you can decide in advance what you would like to focus on. If you are particularly interested in architectural history, Hospital de Cervelló and Església de Sant Joan offer different historical and architectural perspectives. If you would rather explore geological formations and their surroundings, Avenc de l'Esquerrà and Pont Natural de l'Arcada, with its surrounding vegetation, are the main attractions. The visits that can be arranged and the Centre's hours, which should be confirmed, are also useful for planning.
