El Portal is the only surviving remnant of Centelles’ former town walls and an example of 16th-century defensive urban architecture. This dual significance makes it a precise starting point for local architectural history: it is both a former fortification and a building designed for defence.
History, architecture and art
The Passeig offers a different architectural focus. Manuel Joaquim Raspall designed this public space in the late Modernist style. This presents two distinct perspectives: El Portal represents 16th-century defensive urban architecture, while the Passeig foregrounds the design of a public space and late Modernist forms. Centelles therefore offers more than one way to explore architecture if culture is your main interest.
The Centre d'Art el Marçó Vell complements this architectural history with art education. This museum preserves and presents the local artistic heritage. Its role is clearly distinct from that of the architectural examples: its focus is on preserving and presenting art.
The Camí fluvial and local nature
The Camí fluvial brings Centelles’ local flora and fauna into focus, which you can discover along this trail. It follows the riera de la Cira stream to the Congost River. Both the natural subject and the route along the waterways are clearly defined. Unlike El Portal, the Passeig and the art centre, this is not about architectural or art history, but about local nature. If you are choosing between these themes, this is a clear difference in focus.
Mill, cheese and seasonal events
The culinary side is also linked to a specific place: at Molí de la Llavina, you can visit the grain mill and sample artisanal cheese. This appeals to two different interests—the mill as a technical and craft-related subject, and cheese as a food. This lets you combine a visit to the mill with a tasting, while recognising that these are two distinct experiences.
The Fira de la Ratafia i Productes de la Terra takes place in June and features herbal liqueurs, organic food and aromatic herbs. If you are interested in these products, June gives you a specific timeframe to consider when planning your trip. The Fira de la Tòfona has a different focus: it is dedicated to truffles and high-quality food, and takes place on the weekend before Christmas. The two Firas therefore differ in both their themes and when they take place.
The Cau de Bruixes is timed in relation to Carnival: it takes place fifteen days before the official Carnival or one week before Centelles’ Carnival. Unlike the two Firas, its timing is described in relation to a Carnival date. Check the specific event date if the festival is a deciding factor in choosing when to travel.
Your interests point to different options: El Portal, the Passeig and the Centre d'Art el Marçó Vell offer architectural history, design and art education; the Camí fluvial focuses on nature; and Molí de la Llavina and the Firas offer the mill, cheese and food. Checking the event dates listed above can help you match these interests to your planned travel dates.
