From the battlements of Castell de Balsareny, the view stretches across the Llobregat River, Balsareny, Montserrat and the Pyrenees. The 14th-century Gothic civil palace is arranged around a central courtyard. Together with churches from different periods of construction and routes along the Séquia, Balsareny reveals several sides of its history and landscape.

Castle and Building History

Castell combines a striking vantage point with a clear architectural form: the central courtyard organizes the Gothic civil palace, while the battlements open up views of the river, town and mountains. The activity “Visita al castell de Balsareny” is aimed at families and adults. The rooms and areas included are the courtyard, the weapons room, the grand rooms, the kitchen and dining room, the Baron’s room, the Tinell Hall and the cellar.

On the slope of the castle hill stands La Torreta del Castell de Balsareny, a small fortification. It was probably built in connection with the Carlist Wars of the 19th century. This cautious historical interpretation distinguishes it from the securely dated construction history of Castell: here, the connection to 19th-century conflicts is presumed, rather than a precise construction date.

Churches and Distinctive Architectural Forms

The parish church of Santa Maria, known in Catalan as Església Parroquial de Santa Maria, is first mentioned in 1009. The building, designed according to Romanesque principles, dates from the late 13th century; the church underwent extensive renovations in the 16th and 17th centuries. These different dates tell the story of distinct stages in its history.

Sant Esteve de la Colònia Soldevila is a Romanesque church documented in 1038. Parts of the original nave and the central apse area have survived despite later Neo-Romanesque additions. Sant Ramon de Sobirana de Ferrans features a different architectural form: two completely independent naves are connected by a single arch. This arrangement is considered exceptional in Catalonia and beyond.

Sant Vicenç de Ladernet lies in ruins, yet large parts of the structure and interior of the pre-Romanesque church remain. It is set in a wooded location on the left bank of the Riera de Conangle stream. Smaller cultural landmarks also have their own character: the wall paintings by Josep Obiols are in the small chapel of Casal Verge de Montserrat. Forn d'obra de les Collades stands out from most brick kilns, which are square, thanks to its cylindrical shape.

You can see another architectural form at Pont de la Via. The bridge is approximately 90 metres long and has four arches. Its sidewalks and railings make it suitable for pedestrians. The structures thus differ not only in age and function, but also in their visible forms: from a church interior to a brick kiln and an arch bridge.

Routes Along the Séquia and Through Balsareny

The Séquia de Manresa begins at Resclosa dels Manresans, below the hill of Castell de Balsareny. After about 600 metres, it emerges from underground in an area characterized by riparian woodland. It continues through the municipalities of Balsareny, Sallent, Santpedor and Sant Fruitós de Bages, reaching Parc de l’Agulla in Manresa.

The Els Origens de la Séquia (Balsareny) route links specific points along this waterway: it descends from Castell to Resclosa dels Manresans and returns along the Séquia. The Camí Ral takes a different route. It runs from Balsareny Town Hall to Cal Joanic, following the old royal road. The descriptions can help you choose what to focus on when planning: one route follows Castell, the dam and the canal, while the other follows the historic royal road.

The municipality also has a geological and mining heritage route. For those considering a longer mountain biking route, there is another scale to consider: the long route along the Séquia is 46.8 kilometres and extends into the municipality of Balsareny. This distance applies to this mountain biking route; the routes described through Balsareny each have their own starting points and courses.

Festa dels Traginers

The Festa dels Traginers takes place every year on Sexagesima Sunday, the Sunday before Carnival. Its date therefore changes on the calendar each year. Torrada del Traginer is served early in the morning; in the morning, the market, tavern and carter’s provisions shop open. As the festival programme may change from year to year, it is worth checking the dates and current programme before visiting.
