In Esparreguera, a tradition of theatrical performances meets a history of ceramics and geological features. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are looking for a specific cultural event, are interested in local crafts or want to explore the landscape through its rocks and landforms. Some activities are tied to specific holidays or a temporary museum closure; others focus on routes and named natural sites.

The Passion Play and the Campanar d'Esparreguera

La PassiĂł d'Esparreguera is staged every year during Holy Week, between March and May, with a total of nine performances. The first documented performances date back to the early 17th century. At the same time, the Passion Play is part of a centuries-old popular tradition that connects the Middle Ages with the 21st century. If you want to plan your trip around a performance, check the specific dates within this period.

Another notable part of the cultural heritage is the Campanar d'Esparreguera: at 63 metres, it is the second-tallest parish church bell tower in Catalonia. It is accessed from inside the parish church of Santa Eulàlia. Its sections include the reception room, the weight room, the clock room, the bell chamber, the balcony and the cupola. The tower’s height and named architectural features offer a different historical perspective from the Passion Play tradition.

Industrial history and ceramics

The Museu de la Colònia Sedó is located within the municipality of Esparreguera, on the right bank of the Llobregat. Its exhibits include a model of the settlement with a light-and-sound presentation, as well as a three-dimensional audiovisual display projected inside the turbine’s water supply pipe. On 14 October 2026, the museum is temporarily closed for museographic improvement work. It is expected to reopen on 7 November 2026. Before visiting, check whether it has reopened. Telephone reservations are required for guided tours on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays; confirm their availability after the reopening.

The journey there can also be planned precisely: the La Hispano Igualadina bus service goes as far as Esparreguera; from there, continue on foot along Carrer del Mestre TomĂ s Cabeza, also known as Riera del Puig, to the colony. This section is 2.3 kilometres and takes about half an hour. This lets you factor the walking distance into your museum visit plans without confusing it with a tour of the museum.

The local ceramic tradition goes back further: turning clay into objects has been a continuous activity in the Esparreguera area since the 16th century. The Espai de la Terrissa preserves the town’s last surviving wood-fired kiln for making ceramics, which belonged to Terrisseria Sedó, as well as a collection of popular and practical ceramic pieces from the town’s various pottery workshops. The Ruta de la ceràmica draws attention to ceramic decorations on house façades and ends with a visit to the active workshop les Ceràmiques Sedó.

If you would rather explore a broader technical heritage than ceramic crafts, the Ruta dels invents offers insights into Esparreguera’s industrial, scientific and technological history. A literary route is based on “Un camí fràgil” by Antònia Galceran i Monné. These activities have different focuses: local ceramics, technological subjects and a literary reference.

Geological routes and natural sites

Els Blaus, also known as Roques Blaves, is a protected geological area around the Riera del Puig and Torrent del Puig. It was formed by movements along a major fault. The Ruta geològica offers a closer look at rocks and minerals such as calcareous tufa and pyrite, as well as geological structures, including faults and stratigraphic gaps. The different terraces of the Llobregat are also among the features to observe along this route.

The Ruta natural offers a different perspective on the landscape: it follows rural paths to Mas Manader, with opportunities along the way to observe native flora and geological features. The Mirador del Mas Manader is a separate landmark at an elevation of around 400 metres on the ridge of the Serra de Can RubiĂł. The descriptions of the route and the viewpoint cover different aspects of the area; they are not interchangeable.

An event at Santa Maria del Puig may also be relevant to your plans: the Aplec del Puig takes place there every Easter Monday. Together with the Passion Play performances, these are two clearly specified calendar events. Ceramics, technological history and geology, by contrast, offer thematic points of interest without requiring you to plan your trip around either of these holidays.
