El Bruc lies at the foot of Montserrat and brings together local history and a landscape shaped by woodland. Its architecture reflects different uses and periods of construction, while museum exhibits, historic routes and the Festa del Timbaler recall the battles of 1808. When planning your stay, you can explore the area through your interests in architectural history, cultural memory or landscape.

Architecture and Local History

Can Casas brought together different functions under one roof: the ground floor housed rooms for a winery and distillery, while the main floor contained an elegant residence. The building was designed and supervised by Cristòfor Cascante i Colom, who studied and worked with Antoni Gaudí. Can Casas Petit has a different character: the Modernist building, dating from the early 20th century, is located in Bruc del Mig. Vil·la Antoinette, also known as Can Díaz, is another Modernist residence. Ricard Giralt designed it as a second home; it was built in 1916.

At Can Cordero, the materials take centre stage. Its ceramic construction and the terracotta tiles covering the entire building reflect the importance of the brick industry in El Bruc. Together, these examples illustrate different aspects of architectural history: how spaces were used, who designed them, and the relationship between building materials and local industry.

The town layout is another defining historical feature: El Bruc de la Parròquia retains its original medieval plan. By contrast, the Torre del Telègraf, also known as Castell Ferran, was built in the mid-19th century as part of a telegraph chain. This connected Barcelona with several military garrisons stationed in Catalonia. From the 789-metre-high tower, you can see the approaches to the 744-metre-high Can Maçana pass on its south and north sides.

Remembering 1808 and Montserrat

The Festa del Timbaler commemorates the battles fought on 6 and 14 June 1808 around Coll de Can Maçana during the Peninsular War. The festival has been held on the first weekend of June for many years. It features street theatre, traditional children’s games, a historic market, historical re-enactments, trabucaires, drummers and a beer festival. Check the exact dates and programme for each year’s event.

The Museu de la Muntanya de Montserrat del Bruc features collections on the battles of El Bruc and climbing on Montserrat. The 14-minute audiovisual presentation “Sensacions Verticals” uses the “Cavall Bernat” as an example to show climbing techniques and equipment. If you are planning a museum visit, check the latest visitor information in advance. A smartphone audio guide uses QR codes to introduce the town’s streets and history.

Landscape and Routes

Much of El Bruc is covered by woodland, including pine, oak and holm oak forests. There are also hazel and almond trees. Access to the Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat via Can Maçana has helped bring more activity to El Bruc. The area’s different routes also offer interesting ways to explore the landscape: the section of the Camí de les Batalles from Bruc de Dalt to Les Creus Verdes offers a sweeping view of the battlefield.

The Megalit de la Diablera is located along the route from El Bruc to Can Maçana and has a small information board. A path also branches off this route to Cova Tapada. This is where the only known megalithic remains in the massif, as well as Neolithic burials, were discovered. The two sites have different archaeological associations: the Megalit has an information board, while Cova Tapada is associated with the remains and burials discovered there. From the Torre del Telègraf, you can look towards the approaches to Can Maçana; the Camí section, meanwhile, offers views of the battlefield.
