Castellar del Vallès can be explored by starting with a clear choice: should your stay focus primarily on a route to Puig de la Creu, architectural heritage or an event date? The Itinerari pel Puig de la Creu offers a specific route with a stated difficulty level; churches, traces of historic settlements and local events offer different focuses. This allows you to tailor your trip to the topics that interest you most.

Trails and Landscape

The Itinerari pel Puig de la Creu is 9.3 kilometres long and rated easy. It leads to Puig de la Creu, which offers extensive panoramic views. The route length and rating provide a concrete basis if you want to choose a route based on these two features; the panoramic view is an additional aspect of the destination.

The Era d’en Patasques offers a different view, from a lookout point overlooking Sant Feliu and La Mola. The perspectives are specifically distinct: a wide panoramic view is described at Puig de la Creu, while from the Era d’en Patasques the view extends to two named places. The Riu Ripoll runs through the municipality from north to south. In addition, part of the municipality lies within the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. The river and natural park add further connections to the municipality’s landscape beyond the individual viewpoints.

Architecture and Early History

The Església de Sant Esteve was built between 1885 and 1892 and is known as the “Cathedral of the Vallès”. The Palau Tolrà dates from 1890 and was formerly the residence of the Tolrà family. These are two different points of historical interest: a construction period for the church and a former residential function for the palau.

Castell de Castellar, also known as Castellar de Clasquerí, is first mentioned in a deed of gift from 912. Castellar Vell also contains evidence of an early medieval settlement, documented as Puig Castellar. This should be distinguished from Puig de la Creu, the destination of the trail of the same name.

In Castellar Vell, a former parish church preserves pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and proto-Gothic building phases, as well as a bell tower from the 16th century. This classification is based on a municipal archaeological report published during the 2025–2026 campaign. The different building phases and the later bell tower give the church its own historical sequence.

Agriculture and Festival Dates

Agriculture is also part of the local story. Can Casamada is a historic masia with a long family tradition; Mongetes del Ganxet beans are mainly harvested there. This cultivation adds a specific agricultural dimension to the architectural and settlement history. A market for artisan-produced foods is held in Castellar on Sant Josep. Its tradition dates back to the mid-1980s; one edition took place in 2018.

The Aplec de Castellar Vell takes place on the third Sunday in May around the former medieval church of Sant Esteve de Castellar. The programme includes a traditional rice-cooking competition. The Festa Major de Castellar del Vallès is considered the town’s most important celebration; its 2026 edition was scheduled for the second Sunday in September. Check the dates and programme for both events before a future trip.
