In Avinyó, Romanesque architectural heritage, evidence of military communications and a variety of routes come together. This lets you explore the area through several historical themes or focus on a route with a specific destination nearby. Wine and gastronomy are also among the experiences on offer here.
Romanesque architectural heritage and traces of history
Sant Joan d’Avinyó preserves parts of the Romanesque walls of its nave. The three apses were reconstructed in the 20th century. In addition, a church called Sant Joan was built and reconsecrated in Avinyó in 1232.
Several Romanesque buildings in Avinyó have been altered over time and supplemented with elements from newer architectural styles; this is true of most of them. The town’s architectural history therefore extends beyond a single period. Those interested in architecture can view Romanesque features and later additions as different layers of the same local history.
The Torre de l’Abadal also stands out for its distinctive architectural style: it features a round, battlemented tower, as well as decorative mosaics and stained-glass windows. Cal Verdaguer, meanwhile, is a masia protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL). These two examples add further architectural and cultural aspects to the Romanesque buildings, though they do not belong to the same period.
The Torre dels Soldats offers a glimpse into the history of optical communications. It was part of an optical telegraph network built by the Liberal Army during the Second Carlist War, also known as the Guerra dels Matiners. This reveals a military-historical context distinct from the architectural history of the churches and masias.
At the Fira dels Matiners, historical scenes are performed in the streets of Avinyó. They explain the reasons for the Matiners uprising and the events that took place in Avinyó at the time. This makes it possible to explore the theme not only through buildings, but also through the events depicted and their historical context.
Routes, the river and trail markers
The Pont Vell crosses the Riera de Relat. This is a clear geographical relationship between the bridge and the river; the Avinyó–Sant Miquel de Terradelles–Avinyó route is a separate excursion. It starts in the town of Avinyó and leads to the parish church of Sant Miquel de Terradelles in the municipality of Santa Maria de Merlès, in the Berguedà comarca. The Font de la Rovirassa is also on this route. Its name therefore points to a destination outside the town of Avinyó, while the starting point is there.
Another route is the Camí Ramader Central drovers’ trail, which passes through Avinyó. In 2013, signposts were in place on the section between Pont Vell and Alpens. If you plan to take this section, check the current trail markers before setting out: the signage in place at the time does not tell you what condition they are in today.
Wine, gastronomy and interactive discoveries
Celler Abadal is located in Santa Maria d’Horta d’Avinyó and offers wine tourism experiences focused on wine, landscape and gastronomy. Its vineyards stretch across small plots and terraces, surrounded by Mediterranean woodland. The “Visita Vi&Formatge” experience pairs Abadal wines with cheese. This offers a specific food pairing alongside the historical themes.
El Juego del Geoparque offers interactive routes in Avinyó that can be enjoyed using a mobile device. Participants solve puzzles and identify rocks, cultural heritage and landscapes. This format brings different themes together in one activity, while the route to the parish church and the wine and cheese experience each have a different focus.
