Pareja brings together a distinctive local history with landscapes and connections to the water. The Iglesia Parroquial and the Museo de las Brujas offer different historical perspectives, while the Mirador de Castilviejo looks out over the town and its surroundings. Activities on the water and paths through the landscape add further dimensions. You can plan your stay around the themes that interest you most, rather than reducing Pareja to a single attraction.

Views of Pareja and its surroundings

The Mirador de Castilviejo offers panoramic views of Pareja. The outlook can be clearly divided by direction: to the south lie the Vega of the Río Ompólveda and the paths towards Casasana and Tabladillo. To the west, the view stretches to the Embalse de Entrepeñas, the Pareja dam and the town centre. The landscape, paths, reservoir and settlement each provide a distinct point of interest. If you like to take in more than one perspective from a viewpoint, this clear distinction helps you take in the surrounding area.

Church, plaza and architectural traces

The Iglesia Parroquial de Pareja is an imposing 16th-century building that reflects the former power of the Lords of Pareja, the bishops of Cuenca. It has three naves covered by ribbed vaults. This gives its historical context a tangible architectural dimension: alongside its date, the layout of the church interior is a key feature. Pareja’s Plaza Mayor is considered one of the most interesting urban ensembles in La Alcarria. Preserved sections of the town’s former walls add to this picture of the town. The Eremitorio is another distinctive architectural form: it is carved into a sandstone outcrop. Together, the church, plaza, wall remains and Eremitorio represent different aspects of the town’s architectural and local history.

A museum on Pareja’s history

The Museo de las Brujas de Pareja is housed in a renovated medieval tower. It presents extensive educational and historical material about the Inquisition trial in Pareja. This adds another clearly defined aspect of the town’s history alongside its architectural heritage. History enthusiasts will find a second way into the subject here: not through the form of a building, but through the presentation of a local historical topic.

Exploring the water and trails

At the Azud de Pareja, there is a landing stage for non-motorised water sports. A three-kilometre path with urban furniture is also located there. The length gives you a clear idea of the route, while its facilities add a practical dimension. At the Embalse de Entrepeñas, Pareja offers suitable opportunities for a wide range of activities on the water. The surrounding area also has walking trails that connect hills, Mediterranean vegetation and panoramic views of the reservoir. You can choose between different options: a landing stage for non-motorised water sports at the Azud, a wide range of activities at the Embalse, or trails through the landscape around Pareja.

Easter and getting there

On Easter Sunday, Pareja holds the Santo Encuentro procession and the Quema del Judas. Garnacha, a drink typical of Pareja, and rosquillas made in Pareja are served during the celebration. The specific programme may vary from year to year. If you plan to visit for the celebration, check the schedule for the Easter festivities you wish to attend in advance.

By road, take the N-320 towards Cuenca; after SacedĂłn, turn onto the N-204. Check road conditions before setting off. This lets you plan your journey around your interests, whether you are most drawn to local history, the view from the Mirador, activities on the water or the recurring Easter tradition.
