Albalate de Zorita can be explored through its hiking trails, architectural history and festivals. There are specific differences to consider when planning your trip: two circular routes specify their distance and estimated duration, the Ruta de la Vega is characterized by its gentle slopes, and Miravalles offers views across the Tajo Valley. Historic buildings and scheduled events round out the options. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide what to focus on: a particular hike, architectural history or an event date.

Hiking trails: time, distance and scenery

The Cerro del Poste circular hiking trail is 6.93 kilometers long and has an estimated duration of two hours. It starts and ends at Parque Pepe Loeches. At an altitude of 950 meters, the trail offers views of Albalate de Zorita, the Sierra de Altomira and the Tajo Valley. This allows you to factor a specific hiking time and named viewpoints into your plans.

The shorter of the two described circular routes is Cerro de la Ermita: 3.8 kilometers, with an estimated duration of one hour and ten minutes. The start and finish are at Plaza del Coso. When comparing the two loops, you can use the stated distances and time frames as a guide: less time is estimated for Cerro de la Ermita than for Cerro del Poste. The route passes the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the Fuente de la Villa and the Iglesia de San Andrés, connecting the hike with three named buildings.

The other trails offer different selection criteria. The Ruta de la Vega has only gentle slopes and is considered an easy hiking trail suitable for children. The Miravalles hiking trail leads to the viewpoint in the Miravalles area. Extensive pine forests open up views across the Tajo Valley. You can therefore make your choice based on the time you want to spend on a loop, the gradient or the scenery.

Buildings and history in town

The Fuente de la Villa, also known as the Fuente de los Trece Caños, is documented as far back as 1557 and is considered one of Albalate de Zorita’s best-known symbols. The present structure dates from the 17th century, is designed in the Renaissance style and was expanded in the early 20th century. The two dates distinguish the history of the fountain’s origins from the later expansion of its present structure.

The Iglesia de San Andrés is a Gothic church dating from the late 15th century. The revered Cruz del Perro, the patron saint of Albalate de Zorita, is located in the Capilla de Santa Cruz. Construction work on the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios began in 1655; its completion in 1676 is considered probable. The ermita is a rectangular Baroque building with a Herrerian portal. The church, fountain and ermita thus offer different architectural and historical points of reference for a focus on the town’s history.

The ruins of the Ermita de Cubillas are located in the cemetery, a short distance from the town. This site can also be included in your travel plans as a distinct historical point of interest.

Festivals and cultural events

On February 3, the feast day of San Blas, the saint is accompanied in a procession after the main Mass. Botargas and dancers perform a dance, praising the saint to the sound of drums and large castanets. The PasiĂłn Viviente takes place on the afternoon of Holy Saturday: live performers portray the Passion of Jesus in 13 scenes. The event is recognized as a festival of provincial tourist interest and is staged every year. If you plan to travel for the PasiĂłn Viviente, check the date for the relevant year in advance.

The Muestra Folk has been held in Albalate de Zorita since 1998. It combines traditional music with tastings, crafts, exhibitions, children’s games, and a gathering of botargas and dancers. In addition to religious festivals, music and other cultural activities are also part of the program.
