Castillo de Atienza stands at the highest point of the town, on a rocky outcrop. The military complex dates from the 11th and 12th centuries. From the accessible watchtower, the terrace offers views of Atienza and its surroundings—a striking introduction to the town’s history.

Castle and Historic Buildings

The castle is open daily and admission is free. A flight of steps with no ramp leads to the entrance; two more flights of steps, also without ramps, lead to the watchtower. As access information can change, check it before your trip.

The historic ensemble also offers an overview of several centuries of architectural history: it is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), with the designation dating from February 23, 1962. Its architecture ranges from Romanesque and Gothic to Baroque and Rococo, spanning the 12th to the 18th centuries. Of Atienza’s historic city gates, San Juan, also known as Arrebatacapas, de la Virgen and de la Salida are well preserved.

Plaza del Trigo is accessible around the clock and is connected to Plaza de España by the Arco de Arrebatacapas. Iglesia de Santa María del Rey, Atienza’s oldest surviving religious building, dates from the early 12th century. Its exterior can be visited around the clock; the interior is accessible only on August 15, from 12:00 to 14:00. Check access conditions before visiting, as they can change.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The Centro de Interpretación de la Cultura Tradicional of Guadalajara province is located in the Posada del Cordón. The building is a former 15th-century manor house; the museum contains more than 600 ethnographic objects. The Oficina de Turismo de Atienza is also located in the Posada del Cordón museum.

The Museo de la Santísima Trinidad is housed in a 13th-century church that combines Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. One section is dedicated to La Caballada and displays historical documents, clothing and photographs. The Museo de San Gil brings together religious art, goldsmithing and archaeology; its archaeological collections include prehistoric and ancient finds from the comarca.

The Museo de San Bartolomé brings together architectural history and natural history: Romanesque features survive in the porch, apse arch, baptismal font and triumphal arch. The museum also has a collection of more than 3,500 fossils from every geological period.

La Caballada and When to Visit

La Caballada is a festival of National Tourist Interest, held on Pentecost Sunday. The traditional story behind it concerns a ruse by Atienza’s muleteers’ brotherhood on the morning of Pentecost in 1162: during a mock pilgrimage to the nearby Ermita de la Virgen de la Estrella, fast horses carried the young king as far as Ávila and distracted the Leonese troops.

Local cuisine also takes up the theme seasonally: throughout May, restaurants in Atienza offer special menus inspired by La Caballada. The festival falls on the movable date of Pentecost; for planning, it is worth checking the dates and the program for that year before your trip.

Stages and Getting There

Atienza lies on the Ruta de la Lana on the Camino de Santiago: Stage 20 ends here, running from Mandayona via Sigüenza to Atienza, and Stage 21 begins here, running from Atienza to Retortillo de Soria. The Tierras de Frontera BTT-MTB route runs from Atienza in Guadalajara to Ateca–Calatayud in Zaragoza. It can be traveled on foot, by mountain bike, on a cycling tour or by vehicle.

ALSA operates bus services every day of the week between Atienza, Guadalajara and Madrid in both directions. The bus does not enter the town, but stops at the Cantaperdiz junction; two car transport services are available from there to reach the town center. Timetables and transport services can change. Check your connection before traveling.

If the festival date or seasonal menu is important to your trip, check the relevant dates before booking.
