River landscape and geology

Zaorejas lies beside the deeply cut, forested valley of the Tagus and within the Parque Natural del Alto Tajo. The river and landscape set the scene for a stay that combines nature and local history. Nearby, the Mirador Zaorejas offers views of the Tagus meanders, which lie 250 metres below, as well as the river canyon, wooded cliffs and rock pinnacles.

The Mirador de Zaorejas can be reached via a track that climbs southeast and is about five kilometres from Zaorejas. Check the track conditions before visiting. The viewpoint has wheelchair access, extensive accessible facilities and parking, including reserved spaces for adapted vehicles. Facilities also include a small ramp, an interpretation table, signs with Braille and raised lettering, and parallel pathways along the walkways. As the condition of the facilities may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

The georoute between Puente de San Pedro and Mirador de Zaorejas takes in the Tagus Canyon and the tufa formations at La Escaleruela and Puente de San Pedro. La Escaleruela is a seasonally active tufa waterfall in the municipality of Zaorejas. Its spectacular terraced shape gives it its name; water flow may vary depending on rainfall.

Village character and river history

In the village, Zaorejas preserves narrow lanes lined with low limestone houses that reflect its rural character. The Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Silos also tells of an earlier function: it originally served as a watchtower. Just over a kilometre south of the village centre, the Roman aqueduct stands in the ravine of the Fuentelengua stream. It has a single arch, beneath which a Roman road once ran.

The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn del RĂo Tajo is in the village centre. It traces the river from its source to its mouth in Portugal, with a particular focus on its course through the Parque Natural del Alto Tajo. The exhibition covers the river's species, vegetation in gorges and canyons, geological origins, and the relationship between the river, people and culture. The visitor programme includes guided tours with environmental guides and interpreters, as well as a documentary screening. The Centro is open year-round; check opening times and the availability of guided tours in advance.

River, festivals and trails

Puente de San Pedro is freely accessible and is especially popular as a swimming spot in summer. It can be reached via the CM-2015, which connects Zaorejas with Molina de AragĂłn; there is a car park next to the bridge. Check road conditions and access regulations locally.

At the Fiesta Ganchera, traditional log driving is faithfully reenacted, accompanied by traditional food, music and folk games. This travelling festival takes place in September in one of five municipalities: Peralejos de las Truchas, Poveda de la Sierra, Peñalén, Taravilla or Zaorejas. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the location and dates.

The Camino Natural offers two different trail connections to Zaorejas: Stage 5 from Poveda de la Sierra ends in the village. Stage 6 runs from Zaorejas to Villar de Cobeta and shares its start and finish sections in Zaorejas with Stage 5. The section of the Camino Natural connected with Zaorejas is also designated as a cycling stage and corresponds to stages 6 and 7.

Campamento Fuente de la Parra is an active tourism camp in Zaorejas, in the province of Guadalajara; its facilities are located in the Parque Natural del Alto Tajo. Activities include canoeing, kayaking, climbing and walks in the surrounding area. The camp rents out equipment for canoe trips and modern gear. The availability of activities and equipment may change; enquire in advance.
