Playa de Las Aguas is a natural pebble beach with natural bathing areas. An avenue beside the beach offers space for walking and relaxation. The Sendero Las Aguas runs from Las Aguas to Barrio del Rosario. It follows a dirt and stone path along the coastal platform and also serves as a viewpoint over the sea. This means that different attractions sit side by side along the coast: bathing areas, a place to walk and relax, and a hiking trail with two named endpoints.
Coastal Path and Landscape
Along the Sendero, the path passes tamarisks, reeds and agaves, as well as potato and banana fields. So, alongside views of the sea, the route also takes in plants and cultivated land. For anyone interested in the route, it offers more than a description of the coastal platform: the plants and fields mentioned give a concrete impression of the landscape features along the way.
The Village and Its Surroundings
Las Aguas was built on the remains of an old arm of a volcanic lava flow. The village’s appearance combines white houses with black rocks, green plantations and the blue sea. From Las Aguas, there is also a direct view of the steep terraces of Los Alenes and the rocky outcrop of Mazapé. The geological background, the appearance of the village and the views are distinct aspects: the lava-flow arm is part of the village’s origins, while the terraces and rocky outcrop mentioned are separate landmarks in the surrounding landscape.
Nearby, on the coastal edge of the town centre of San Juan de la Rambla, lies the Charco de La Laja tidal pool. It consists of basaltic lava flows and pyroclasts. The Barranco de Ruiz nearby is also designated an area of scientific interest; it preserves remnants of laurel forest, thermophilous woodland and cliff communities. The nearby Acantilados, Ladera del Barranco de la Chaurera y Ruiz complex contains numerous dwelling and burial caves. These sites each have a different focus: the tidal pool’s geological composition, the ravine’s habitats, and the cave complex’s dwelling and burial caves. This makes it possible to explore the surroundings through specific landscape features beyond the beach and coastal path.
Maritime Tradition and Events
The fishermen of Las Aguas are part of the local fishing activity. A municipal cultural contribution dated 4 July 2025 describes the San Pedro festival as an expression of maritime devotion and tradition. The La Cruz y San Pedro festival takes place in Las Aguas on the second weekend of July; the exact dates vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the dates for the relevant year. A procession with San Pedro goes from the square through the neighbourhood and along Avenida de Las Aguas to the beach. Specific programme details may also vary from year to year.
A memorial installation unveiled in 2016 on Avenida de Las Aguas was dedicated to the sea and the work of the fishermen. Its design at the time included four large fish traps filled with metal fish and a large anchor. The anchor commemorated the former landing stage of the old port of Las Aguas. The historical design adds concrete motifs to the maritime tradition: fishing, the sea and the memory of the former port.
