The mountain circular route “Cercanías del Cielo” starts and ends in La Vega. There is also a walking route exploring place names across the municipality of Sariego, a gravel loop and themes related to rural heritage. These options differ considerably for planning your trip: from a hike lasting several hours to a cycling route and trails that focus on places and their names.
The mountain circular route from La Vega
“Cercanías del Cielo” is a 14.9-kilometre, moderately difficult circular mountain route. It starts beside the Chapel of Carmen in La Vega and returns to its starting point in the town. The estimated duration is more than five hours, and the route can be walked year-round. Take the stated duration into account when planning your day and check local conditions before setting out.
The gentle ascent passes through fields bordered by stone walls and sections of native vegetation. The route’s character is shaped by nature, rural heritage and sections of the Way of St James.
Place names on foot, landscapes by bike
The “Ruta de la Toponimia” offers a different focus. It starts beside its information board at the entrance to Vega Park and continues on foot through the villages and settlements of the municipality of Sariego. Educational boards explain the origins of place names and provide further information about each location. If you are interested in language and local history, the interpretation of the names is the main focus here; “Cercanías del Cielo,” by contrast, is described as a mountain circular route with a specified duration and distance.
The “Tour of Sariego” is a 22-kilometre circular gravel route that starts and finishes in Vega. It combines roads and gravel paths in a rural setting where meadows blend into woodland. Its stated distance and gravel terrain offer a different basis for planning than the hiking route; a short, signposted detour leads to the “Perriellos” viewpoint.
Views and rural heritage
“Perriellos” is located in a recreation area of the same name. From there, you can see the Peñamayor and Sueve mountain ranges and, on a clear day, the Picos de Europa on the horizon. The viewpoint is also a recommended stop for visitors on foot or by bike. The signposted detour on the “Tour of Sariego” provides cyclists with a described connection from the route.
Another heritage site is the Pozo de los Llobos, an old wolf trap traditionally used to catch wolves. It bears witness to the region’s traditional livestock culture. This section of the Way of St James also reaches La Vega, where a pilgrims’ hostel opens its doors. If this accommodation is important to your plans, check its current availability before travelling.
The local cuisine also offers a regional connection: the traditional cuisine of the municipality of Sariego is influenced by central Asturias, with fabada and pote asturiano playing an important role. This adds a culinary aspect of the municipality to the trails and heritage themes, without attributing it solely to La Vega.
