A 16th- and 17th-century tower, a former palace chapel that now serves as a parish church, and a mill more than 400 years old give Nevares and its parish a distinctive cultural and historical character. Vineyards at the palace and the Entre Parres y Piloña cycling route add agriculture and a regional trail through several parishes to this picture.

Wine Visits and Practical Planning

Free, signposted parking is available for customers of Bodega Palacio de Nevares. Winery tours are open exclusively to visitors aged 18 and over. The tour of the vineyards and winery includes a tasting of the estate’s three top wines. Visitor policies and booking details may change; check them in advance.

Palacio de Nevares: Building History

The oldest part of Palacio de Nevares is its 16th- and 17th-century tower, in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. Additions from the 18th and 19th centuries complete the building. In Parres, Nevares is one of the noble palaces whose construction began in the 16th century and continued through the 17th and 18th centuries. This connects the history of the individual palace with the longer building history of the noble palaces in Parres.

Parish Church and Mill

The Iglesia de San Antonio de Nevares was formerly the chapel of Palacio de Nevares and is now the parish church of San Antonio. It has a single-nave layout and a square chancel with a rib-vaulted ceiling. Inside is a polychrome—that is, multicoloured—coat of arms of the Estrada y Cordero de Nevares family. Its change of function from palace chapel to parish church connects the building’s history with its present-day role.

MolĂn de La Teyera is located in La Teyera, in the parish of Nevares. It is still in operation, is more than 400 years old, and is one of the best-preserved mills in Parres. Check access before visiting. The mill adds an example of continued use to the architectural history of the palace and church.

Vineyards and Landscape

Nevares has a mild microclimate thanks to its location, sheltered from cold winds. The Sierra del Sueve protects the vineyards of Palacio de Nevares from cold northerly winds. The vineyard grape varieties include AlbarĂn, Riesling, GewĂĽrztraminer and MencĂa. Together, the microclimate, shelter from the wind and the grape varieties mentioned offer specific insights into the agricultural side of the area.

Cycling Route Between Parres and Piloña

The Entre Parres y Piloña cycling route continues behind Nevares, Cereceza and Carrazal towards Sorribas, then follows the Cúa and Piloña rivers. It runs along quiet roads and connects parishes between Parres and Piloña. The route offers a regional perspective across several parishes, while the palace, church and mill each have their own cultural and historical significance.
