The Saucedas de Buelles is a natural monument with riverside formations on both banks of the River Deva, between El Mazu, Narganes and Buelles. From the higher part of the village, the view stretches across the river floodplain. The landscape is therefore shaped by two distinct perspectives: the banks of the Deva and the panoramic view over the floodplain.

Hiking along the Deva

The Senda del Deva is a circular trail of about 14.5 kilometres. The 2.5-kilometre detour to the Arboretum is not included in this distance. Near Buelles, the trail crosses the river over a footbridge. Because of high-risk sections along the river, the Senda is classified as difficult; weather and trail conditions can affect the level of difficulty.

Another distance applies to the riverside walk from Buelles towards El Mazo: you can walk for more than 20 kilometres along the banks of the Deva, through the Saucedas de Buelles. This means there are two different scales to consider: a circular trail with a separately specified detour, and a longer riverside walk towards El Mazo.

Check the crossing and trail conditions before setting out. For the Senda del Deva, the classification due to the high-risk sections along the river is an important planning consideration, in addition to the distance.

Church and historic houses

The parish church of San Andrés de Buelles dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and is in the Baroque style. A distinctive detail is the star-vaulted ceiling above the main chapel. The 17th-century Casa de Guerra is also Baroque: it has a rectangular floor plan, two storeys and an attic.

The Casa de La Coteruca, also known as El Coteruco, is a Renaissance-style building dating from the 16th or 17th century. It is recorded as being in an advanced state of ruin. The Casa con Corredor de Buelles dates from the 18th or 19th century and represents a form of vernacular architecture common in western Asturias. A long wooden corridor with carved wooden railings runs between stone party walls.

School architecture is represented too: the Casa Escuela de Buelles was built in 1912 and is an example of school buildings financed by Asturian emigrants who returned from the Americas (Indianos). Two single-storey wings housed the classrooms, while the taller central section contained the teacher’s residence.

Another example of the influence of returning Indianos on the traditional village landscape is the Casa de D. Florencio Milera. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Together with the Casa Escuela, it points to architectural changes that extend beyond the older church and house architecture. The Casa con Corredor, in turn, illustrates a regional architectural form through a specific feature: the long corridor running between party walls.

Getting there and planning

When travelling from Unquera on the N-621, Buelles is the first village in the municipality. When planning your stay, you can consider the river landscape and historic buildings as separate points of interest. For the Senda del Deva, take both its stated difficulty and the conditions along the river into account.
