In Pimiango, an impressive cave, coastal views and striking evidence of local history come together. This offers several ways to plan a stay: explore the distinctive sequence of spaces in Cueva del Pindal, enjoy viewpoints on the coastal plateau, or discover the town’s religious and cultural traditions.

Cueva del Pindal: from daylight into darkness

Cueva del Pindal was declared a monument on 25 April 1924 and has been classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural under Spanish heritage protection law since 1985. Its entrance faces the sea. Beyond it, a large naturally lit vestibule leads into a straight gallery in complete darkness. The first half of the gallery is wide and easy to walk through. This transition from the bright vestibule to the dark cave is what defines the spatial character of the site.

The Centro de Interpretación de San Emeterio is located beside the cave entrance. It focuses mainly on Cueva del Pindal and the Santa María de Tina monastery. If you would like to explore these subjects on site, check the centre’s current visiting arrangements in advance.

Coastal plateau and protected route

There are three viewpoints on Pimiango’s coastal plateau: El Picu, El Picu del Cañón and Snta María de Tina. From there, views extend north to the Costa Cantábrica and south to the Sierra del Cuera, with the Picos de Europa visible in the background. These stated directions give the landscape a clear orientation between coast and mountains.

The Acantilados de Pimiango route offers another way to experience nature. It runs partly through the Ría de Ribadesella – Ría de Tinamayor Natura 2000 site, which is protected as both a ZEC and a ZEPA. As route conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Monastery, chapel and lighthouse

The surviving ruins of a 13th-century Cistercian temple are all that remain of Santa MarĂa de Tina. A footpath there starts near the San Emeterio chapel, close to the Cuevas del Pindal. The route links the chapel and caves as landmarks with the monastery ruins as its destination; conditions along the way may vary.

The Ermita de San Emeterio is a separate building in Pimiango. Its rectangular ground plan comprises a single-nave hall; there are buttresses on the outside and a portico along one side. The San Emeterio lighthouse is also among the town’s historic buildings: it was built in 1852 on the edge of the cliffs and is the easternmost lighthouse in Asturias.

Fuente'I Santu, also known as Fuente de los peregrinos, is another local landmark. The spring lies at the foot of a yew tree on the paved path between the Casa de las Novenas and the San Emeterio chapel.

Mansolea and the Fiesta de Santu Medé

Mansolea is part of Pimiango’s cultural history: it is a cryptic special language developed by itinerant shoemakers as a sign of their group identity. It was known throughout Pimiango because women used it in everyday and family conversation. The language’s history thus links its origins in a particular occupational group with its place in village life.

The Fiesta de Santu Medé is recognized as a festival of tourist interest by the Principality of Asturias. Its traditions include a procession of more than two kilometres on foot from the church of Pimiango to the Ermita de San Emeterio. Sunday is the main day: in the afternoon, following a sung Mass, the Ramu is auctioned in the square. The specific festival dates and programme may change; check them when planning your stay.

When choosing your travel dates, one practical distinction is important: the Fiesta follows a festival programme, while visiting the cave and walking the route are subject to their own current visiting arrangements and trail conditions. If you are considering Pimiango as a place to stay, you can plan your trip around what matters most to you—caves and cultural heritage, coastal scenery or festival traditions.
