Tuiza de Abajo is a destination for travelers who want to explore mountain scenery and local history together. The village lies in the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park; the Peña Ubiña massif rises nearby to heights of more than 2,400 meters. This gives trip planning two clear focuses: trails and mountain panoramas on the one hand, and stone architecture and local history passed down through generations on the other. Which accommodation is right for your stay depends on which of these themes you want to spend more time exploring.
Mountain scenery in the nature park
Tuiza de Abajo, also known as TuĂza Baxo, is a rural settlement in the parish of TuĂza, within the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park. The nature park was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2012. Beech forests shape the woodland landscape of the protected area, alongside stands of oak, birch, chestnut and holly, as well as extensive high-altitude pastures.
Hiking and cycling on the PR AS-93
For hikers, the PR AS-93 route offers a specific option starting from Tuiza de Abajo: it crosses meadows to Los Campos and continues to the pass. Classified as a “Short-Distance Trail (P.R.),” the route is called “Vuelta Puertos de la Bachota.” It was designed especially for cyclists, while also offering sections suitable for hiking. The cycling focus applies to the route as a whole; its suitability for hiking is expressly limited to appropriate sections. If you plan to walk the route, check the signage and current trail conditions before setting out.
In the Puertos de la Bachota area, pastures and trails run along a slope with views of the Ubiña massif. Seasonal mountain conditions can affect access. This view of the massif adds another perspective on the landscape to the specific waypoints of the PR AS-93.
Stone architecture and local history
A protected group of stone buildings in Tuiza de Abajo includes houses, a hórreo and a limestone farm building. The church has a single-nave body, a projecting presbytery that rises above it, and a porch on the entrance side. The nave, presbytery and porch make the church’s layout easy to understand; the houses, granary and church also represent different forms of rural architecture. If you visit the group of buildings, also check their current condition.
According to oral tradition, stone was brought from the hermitage of Acebos to TuĂza Baxo to build the present-day chapel in La Villa. The CaserĂas de Xuan Cacho in Tuiza Baxo comprises three meadows below Axeile by the river, each with a barn and a hut. This cluster of places broadens the view from the buildings in the village to the rural cultural landscape. An avalanche is also part of local history: in TuĂza Baxo, it destroyed four houses and a hĂłrreo; four people lost their lives.
