Villamanrique de la Condesa is considered a natural gateway to Doñana and is also closely connected with the Rocío pilgrimage. The museum, brotherhood and festival each highlight different aspects of its history. Other attractions include the Palacio de Villamanrique de la Condesa de París and its garden, as well as a visitor centre for environmental education and natural history. If you are looking for a hotel in the town, you can plan your trip around whether Rocío traditions, architecture or Doñana is your main focus.

Rocío history at specific sites

The Centro de Interpretación Etnográfica Camino del Rocío is a museum exhibition space about the relationship between Villamanrique de la Condesa, its First and Oldest Rocío Brotherhood, the pilgrimage and the brotherhoods’ passage through the town. It is located on the site of the former Ermita de Santiago. This was the town’s first Christian church and was built in 1253.

The Camino del Rocío Museum’s most important exhibit is the “Simpecado Viejo”: an elongated red banner from the 16th century bearing the oldest known painting of the Virgin of El Rocío. Anyone interested in the objects and history of the pilgrimage will find a tangible introduction to the subject here.

The Primera y Más Antigua Hermandad del Rocío de Villamanrique de la Condesa was the first brotherhood to make the Rocío pilgrimage and establish the first Rocío route. Today, it is called the “Camino de Villamanrique al Rocío”. The brotherhood welcomes pilgrims and visitors throughout the year who wish to see the Simpecado. The festival “Villamanrique, Paso de Hermandades” is also part of the local pilgrimage tradition and dates back two hundred years.

Doñana: visitor centres and routes

The Centro de Visitantes Dehesa Boyal is an environmental education and natural history centre in Doñana Natural Park. It offers tourist services and dining options. The Hinojos–Villamanrique de la Condesa route provides another link between locations: it connects the Centro de Visitantes Los Centenales in Hinojos with the La Dehesa Boyal visitor centre in Villamanrique.

To cycle from Villamanrique de la Condesa to the Centro de Visitantes José Antonio Valverde, follow the same route as for driving. The distance is approximately 25 kilometres each way. Check the condition of the paths before setting out. This gives the cycling route a specific approximate distance; you should factor the actual trail conditions into your plans.

The palace and garden as a protected ensemble

The Palacio de Villamanrique de la Condesa de París and its garden are protected under Decreto 98/1998 as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the Monument category. The architecture combines the design of a traditional Andalusian country house with the surviving remains of the Manríquez de Zúñiga palace. French influences can be seen in the interior furnishings.

The garden is laid out in a romantic style: fruit trees stand among clipped hedges, alongside ornamental plants. These features complement one another to form the ensemble: the palace combines country-house design, palace remains and French influences, while the garden brings together trees, hedges and ornamental plants.

A horseback ride with a set duration

“Paseo a caballo en Villamanrique” is a two-hour horseback ride for all levels in the natural surroundings of Doñana. Its duration gives you a specific time frame to consider when including the activity in your travel plans. Alongside the cultural and historical attractions and visitor centres, it offers a distinct focus for your stay.
