History you can read in the architecture

The Collegiate Church of Osuna combines a precisely dated founding with a building material from the town: in 1535, D. Juan Téllez Girón, the 4th Count of Ureña, obtained a papal bull. This made the then parish church a collegiate church as well. The Collegiate Church was built from ashlar stone sourced from quarries in Osuna. Its origins and materials offer two different ways to understand the building: its ecclesiastical history and the source of the stone used to construct it.

Osuna is a ducal town designated as an artistic and historic site. Its historic centre is distinguished by a rich monumental heritage and typical Sevillian whitewashed buildings. The history of the Collegiate Church can thus be viewed as part of Osuna’s broader architectural heritage, without reducing the architecture of the historic centre to a single building.

Museum and archaeological traces

The Archaeological Museum of Osuna offers a focus on both archaeology and architectural history. It is now housed in a tower in the 12th-century Almohad city walls, which the Knights of the Order of Calatrava remodelled in the 14th century. The first room displays prehistoric remains as well as reproductions of Iberian reliefs found in Osuna. The museum therefore brings together the history of a historic building and finds from different periods. The Osuna Museum also includes a “Hall of Ice and Fire,” dedicated to the series “Game of Thrones.” Museum displays can change, so it is advisable to check before visiting whether the room is still part of the visitor experience.

A different archaeological perspective is offered by Osuna’s Late Antique necropolis. This outdoor site is open to visitors free of charge every day; the caves are generally attributed to the Paleo-Christian period. The necropolis thus differs from a museum visit: the focus is on an open-air site and the cautiously worded dating of its caves. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Stone reliefs and cultural traditions

The Osuna Quarries are former quarries in the territory of ancient Urso. Their spectacular stone reliefs have earned them the name “the Petra of Andalusia.” This adds another dimension to the subject of stone in Osuna: the Collegiate Church is associated with ashlar stone extracted from local quarries, while the quarries themselves are former extraction sites known for their reliefs.

Cultural history, too, can be tied to specific dates. Osuna’s Holy Week was recognised in 1999 as a “Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia.” On 10 October 1548, Pope Paul III authorised the establishment of an Estudio General under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, through the bull “In Supereminenti Apostolicae Sedis.” These are distinct points of reference: the recognition of Holy Week on the one hand, and the papally authorised founding of the Estudio General on the other.

A natural auditorium in Coto Las Canteras has been used for past events, including television shoots, concerts, readings, charity galas and cultural discussions. These uses are part of the event history described here; they do not indicate a current or regularly recurring programme.

Getting there and choosing a travel focus

For travel by road, the A-92 is a useful reference point: it connects the south and east of Spain and runs through the municipal area of Osuna. Trains to Osuna also run from Seville, Málaga, Granada, Almería and Cádiz. As rail services can change, check the current timetable before travelling.

In Seville province, the nature reserve on the Río Corbones is considered navigable and particularly suitable for water sports; local conditions may vary. If you are looking for accommodation in Osuna, you can narrow down your choice by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: the Collegiate Church and Estudio General offer a glimpse of ecclesiastical and institutional history, the museum and necropolis explore archaeological themes, and Holy Week represents cultural traditions. This can help you decide whether Osuna is a good fit for your trip.
