Several themes are worth considering for a trip to Martín De La Jara: the sacred furnishings and architecture of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the Arco de la Teja and Laguna del Gosque. The local points of interest range from church art to an old city gate and a habitat for birds. The time of year also offers different highlights: the pilgrimage of the Virgen del Carmen takes place in July, while the Laguna serves as a wintering and resting area during migration periods, as well as a breeding area.
Church art and architecture
The altarpiece of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario depicts a crucified Christ and Nuestra Señora del Rosario, as well as an 18th-century depiction of San Antonio de Papua. The baptismal chapel contains a 16th-century image of Christ from the Sevillian school. The motifs mentioned therefore differ in location and date: several depictions are grouped together on the altarpiece, while the image of Christ is in the baptismal chapel. The name Nuestra Señora del Rosario also appears in the depiction on the altar. Those interested in sacred art can use these motifs and the two dates as specific points of reference when planning their trip.
The Iglesia has a tower on one side and a bell gable on the opposite side; both are fitted with bells. The tower and bell gable are two different types of bell supports, positioned on opposite sides. This arrangement offers an architectural perspective alongside the depictions on the altar and in the baptismal chapel: here the focus is on form and position, there on motifs and dates.
Arco de la Teja
The Arco de la Teja is an old gate in the walled city and has three round-arched openings. A round arch has a semicircular top; this gate repeats the form three times. The number and shape of the openings give the structure a distinct architectural feature. Unlike the church, the focus here is a gate associated with the walled city. Those interested in architecture can compare the city gate with the religious building: the Arco is notable for its three round-arched openings, while the Iglesia features, among other things, its tower, bell gable and furnishings.
Laguna del Gosque and when to visit
During migration periods, Laguna del Gosque serves as a wintering and resting area, as well as a breeding area for numerous bird species. These are distinct ecological functions: wintering, resting during migration and breeding. In July, the local pilgrimage of the Virgen del Carmen goes to the Laguna. These offer different considerations when choosing when to travel: July for the pilgrimage, and migration or breeding seasons for nature. The Laguna’s seasonal functions therefore have a different seasonal connection from the pilgrimage.
