Mairena Del Alcor’s historical heritage ranges from the restored museum layout of Casa Bonsor to the courtyard of the Casa Palacio de los Duques de Arcos and the objects in the sacristy of Iglesia Mayor Santa María de la Asunción. Other highlights include a hydraulic mill complex, a bread-making tradition, routes and a flamenco festival. Architectural and local history sit alongside regional cuisine, geology and music—different themes to help you decide what you want to shape your stay.

Casa Bonsor in the Castle

Casa Bonsor in Castillo de Mairena del Alcor has undergone extensive restoration. Bonsor’s original museum layout was reinstated, while public access to the building, collections and history was also made easier. The castle thus combines a historic site with a museum layout that follows Bonsor’s original vision.

A reservation is required at least one week in advance to visit the castle. Confirm the visiting arrangements before you arrive. Technical aids and suitable routes have been provided to make the historic heritage more accessible to people with reduced mobility. Check in advance which areas are accessible using these measures.

Palace, Church and Different Historical Periods

The Casa Palacio de los Duques de Arcos is believed to have been founded in the 15th century; only a courtyard surrounded by colonnades remains. The Catholic Monarchs spent the night in this building on June 5, 1500. The dates are given with different levels of precision: the foundation is attributed to the 15th century, while the overnight stay is dated to a specific day.

The origins of Iglesia Mayor Santa MarĂa de la AsunciĂłn are dated to between the 14th and 15th centuries. Its sacristy houses a chalice renovated in Manila in 1787 and an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe painted by Juan Correa. The chalice has a specific place and date associated with it, while the painting is attributed to a named artist.

Mills, Fountains, Bread and Stone

The Molinos Harineros de Campo form a hydraulic complex of four mills. Water was supplied through underground tunnels from the public fountains of Alconchel and Gorda. The castle, popularly known as Castillo de Luna, stands on a hill equidistant from the present-day public fountains of Gorda and Alconchel. The same fountains thus feature in two different contexts: as water sources for the mills and as reference points for the location of the castle.

Another local feature is Mairena bread. The quality of the flour made from crops grown in the comarca is considered one of the secrets behind the bread’s flavor and texture. This is a specific culinary tradition that may also matter when choosing a destination, especially for travelers interested in regional food.

The calcarenite also offers a geological point of interest: marine fossils are often found in the stone used to make albero. Alongside historic buildings and collection pieces, the characteristics of the local stone offer another way to describe the area.

Routes and Flamenco

Mairena Del Alcor is part of the Ruta de la VĂa Verde de Los Alcores. The town also lies along the Ruta de Washington Irving, promoted by the FundaciĂłn El Legado AndalusĂ. These routes add another perspective on the area to its historical themes.

The Festival de Cante Jondo Antonio Mairena is a traditional flamenco festival in the jondo style, held in memory of flamenco singer Antonio Mairena. It has been designated a festival of tourist interest in Andalusia. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for your chosen year.
