In the northern part of the municipality of La Puebla de los Infantes lies the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural Park. The mid-mountain landscape is characterised by elevations between 200 and 500 metres. Nature, elevation and vegetation offer several distinct starting points for planning a trip to this destination.

Landscape and Wildlife

The vegetation in the municipality ranges from xerophilous woodlands with wild olive trees, holm oaks and carob trees, as well as Mediterranean scrubland, to wetter dehesas. Cork oaks, holm oaks, Portuguese oaks and rockroses grow there. The transition from drought-adapted woodlands and scrubland to wetter dehesas shapes the diversity of the landscape. Xerophilous describes plants adapted to dry environments.

The local fauna includes red deer, wild boar, fallow deer, lynxes, otters, golden eagles and eagle owls. Alongside its varied plant habitats, the municipality’s natural environment is therefore also home to mammals and distinctive bird species.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The route description for Las Palomas–Valle de Castril gives a distance of 22.4 kilometres, a circular route and an estimated duration of five hours; the last maintenance date listed is 30 June 2015. The route can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The Camino del Águila is 25 kilometres long, classified as a Sendero de Pequeño Recorrido (short-distance trail), and is also suitable for mountain biking. The two routes therefore differ both in their stated lengths and in the activities described.

To reach the Las Palomas–Valle de Castril route from Seville, take the E-5, A-457 and SE-6102. From Lora del Río, the route follows the Embalse de José Torán.

Activities at the Embalse de José Torán

Fishing is permitted at the Embalse de José Torán. Paramotoring is also possible in the area around the reservoir; local operating conditions may vary. Activities on the water thus complement the hiking and cycling routes, offering another way to tailor a trip to personal interests.

Religious Buildings and Architectural History

The area’s architectural history also offers several points of interest. The Iglesia de Santa María de las Huertas dates from the 15th or 16th century. The Ermita de Santa Ana is a Mudéjar hermitage with transverse arches. Based on its features, the Ermita de Santiago is dated to the 13th or 14th century. The dating of the Santiago hermitage is therefore presented as an assessment based on its architectural characteristics; Santa Ana is distinguished by a specific architectural feature, while the Iglesia de Santa María de las Huertas is associated with a historical period.
