Benacazón combines Mudéjar architecture and religious art with a protected landscape corridor and a regional mosto tradition. The different themes give your stay several possible focuses: architecture and history, local cuisine or the landscape along the Corredor Verde del Guadiamar.
Mudéjar architecture and religious art
The parish church of Santa María de las Nieves is a Mudéjar building with a single nave, a wooden ceiling and a main chapel. The patron saint of Benacazón, the Virgen de las Nieves, is also represented here: her image is housed in the main altarpiece. The church brings together a clearly defined interior and an important religious reference for the town.
Opposite the parish church stands the Casa-Palacio, whose courtyard is surrounded by a Baroque arcade. Another art-historical feature is the altarpiece in the Capilla Sacramental: it was commissioned from the workshop of Juan Martínez Montañés in 1618 and altered in 1632. The church, palace façade and altarpiece represent different architectural elements and historical layers, and cannot be reduced to a single period.
The Ermita de Castilleja de Talhara consists of the ruins of a 15th-century Mudéjar hermitage. Brick and rammed earth characterize its construction, while the windows feature glazed ceramic elements. Its ground plan is basilical: three naves, pointed arches and a square main chapel define the described architecture. The combination of surviving structural elements and ruins distinguishes this site from the parish church.
The Ermita de Gelo also dates back to the 15th century and features Mudéjar architecture. Its slender bell gable dates from the 17th century. Inside, two rows of rectangular pillars divide the rectangular interior into three naves. The hermitage is three kilometres from Benacazón, on the Seville–Villamanrique road, next to Hacienda de Gelo. It offers a distinct architectural focus outside the town.
Landscape along the Guadiamar
The Corredor Verde del Guadiamar crosses the western part of the municipality of Benacazón and has been designated a protected landscape since 2003. One route starts at the bridge by Benacazón Cercanías station and descends to the Corredor Verde. The route links a specific starting point with the landscape corridor; check current trail conditions before visiting. This makes it possible to include the landscape in your travel plans alongside the architectural landmarks.
Mosto and local cuisine
Benacazón’s typical dish is called chícharos y tronchos and consists of beans with chard. Pobre hombre is prepared using leftovers from the dish mentioned above. The two dishes are therefore connected: the second builds on the preparation of the first. Local mosto from Benacazón is available to taste, served with seasoned olives as a tapa. As venues and availability can change, check in advance if you have a particular tasting in mind.
Benacazón is also associated with mosto at a regional level: the town is one of the stops on the Ruta del Mosto aljarafeño. Those interested in this local tradition can find both a typical dish and mosto served with a tapa as different culinary points of interest.
Getting there and planning your stay
Renfe Cercanías line C5 connects Seville and Benacazón. Intercity bus line M-168 connects the two towns via Espartinas. If you plan to use either service, check the current timetable before travelling, as routes and times may change.
When choosing accommodation in Benacazón, you can start by deciding what interests you most: the parish church, Casa-Palacio and the hermitages described here represent different aspects of the town’s architectural history, while the Corredor Verde adds a landscape option. The Ermita de Gelo is three kilometres from Benacazón. This distance and the route’s starting point at the station are useful reference points when coordinating your accommodation plans with the places you intend to visit.
