Cuatrovitas, Zurbarán art and historic haciendas offer different ways to explore the history and landscape of Bollullos De La Mitación. At the pilgrimage site, religious architecture meets recurring festivals; the Ruta de las Haciendas follows signposted trails between rural estates. There is also a nature centre in the pine forest and gastronomic offerings centred on mosto.
Cuatrovitas: sanctuary, architectural history and festivals
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Cuatrovitas is the sanctuary of the Virgen de Cuatrovitas. After the Reconquista, it was converted into a Christian temple. Its brick minaret was built around the 12th century and is derived from Syrian towers. Las Noches de Cuatrovitas is a music series held at the foot of the Almohad minaret, in a historic setting.
The Romería de Cuatrovitas takes place on the fourth Sunday in October. The image of Cuatrovitas is carried in a silver canopy on an ox-drawn cart from Bollullos to its hermitage. Check the date and the arrangements for the year before travelling.
Another festival is Santiago Apóstol on 25 July, when the patronal image of Santa María de Cuatrovitas is carried from its rural chapel into the town. You should also check the arrangements for this festival each year before planning your visit.
Church, art and archaeological traces
The parish church of San Martín de Tours preserves four paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán depicting Santa Catalina, Santa Inés, Santa Lucia and San Blas. The works are dated to between 1640 and 1645. Archaeological remains have also been preserved in Aldea de Cotrovita, associated with a purification ritual or a hammam.
Haciendas and historic trails
The Ruta de las Haciendas follows signposted trails between historic rural haciendas whose origins date back to Roman times. Another historic feature is an Almohad-era water basin preserved near the historic haciendas. This area brings together different historical connections: the estates’ far-reaching origins and the Almohad water basin nearby.
Nature and activities
The Centro de Naturaleza de La Juliana is set in a century-old pine forest. The forest is considered a passage area for birds travelling to Doñana National Park. The nature centre has the “Bosque Suspendido” tree adventure park, described as the first of its kind built in Andalusia. If you plan to take part in this activity, check the current operating conditions in advance.
Mosto, tapas and getting there
The Ruta de la Tapa y el Mosto is a recurring gastronomic event featuring traditional and innovative tapas accompanied by locally typical mosto. Pedro Ximénez grapes are used for the mosto at Bodegas Salas; in Montilla, the grapes are trodden by foot. The mosto then ferments in twenty chestnut barrels and is bottled by hand. At tastings in the bodega, you can sample traditional regional stews and grilled meat with mosto fermented in the bodega’s own barrels. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting.
If you are travelling from Seville or Huelva by car or motorbike, you can reach Bollullos De La Mitación via the A-49 motorway and exit 11. As road conditions can change, check them before setting off.
