In Pujerra, the chestnut is part of the landscape, a cultural theme and a culinary touchstone. The church, the winding streets and the hiking trails also provide practical points of reference for planning your trip. Depending on whether you focus on local history, the chestnut landscape or a walking tour, you can shape your stay in different ways.

Chestnut Culture and Museum Building

The Casa Museo de la Castaña opened in 2012. Chestnuts are its central theme, used to explore historical and cultural aspects of Pujerra and its surroundings. The focus is not solely on the fruit: local history and regional culture are also part of the museum’s subject matter.

The museum is housed in a three-storey building in the town centre. Stone walls and a wooden structure are characteristic of the region’s traditional architecture. Two distinct aspects come together here: the cultural theme of chestnuts and a concrete example of regional architecture.

Church and Winding Streets

The Iglesia del Espíritu Santo was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Its nave is rectangular and has a single aisle; the wooden roof structure is in the Mudéjar style. The church also houses an image of Saint Anthony of Padua dating from the 18th century. He is Pujerra’s patron saint.

The narrow, winding street network is also part of the town’s historic character. It reflects Pujerra’s Andalusian origins and offers a different way to explore local history than the church’s architectural history: here, it is the layout of the streets; there, the floor plan and roof structure of a single building.

Chestnut Landscape and Trails

Pujerra is one of the places in the Alto Genal where the predominant agro-silvo-pastoral landscape is evident in extensive forests devoted to chestnut cultivation. The term describes the interplay of agriculture, woodland and pastoral farming. Dense chestnut groves surround the town; at the same time, Pujerra lies right beside a river. The Mirador del Castañar is one of the town’s attractions.

Two trails with different destinations are described for hiking. The approved PR-A 223 leads from Pujerra to Puerto del Madroño. The PR-A 225 runs from Júzcar to Pujerra and leads to an old washhouse in the area known as La Cruz. Trail conditions may vary; check the latest information before setting out.

Motorcycle touring is also part of the region’s travel offer: the official Serranía de Ronda–Valle del Genal route passes through Pujerra on the MA-7300. As road conditions can change, check them before travelling. Hiking and motorcycle touring are different ways to include the routes mentioned in your plans.

Festivals, Chestnut Cuisine and Local Traditions

The Fiesta de la Castaña takes place after the chestnut harvest has ended and coincides with the feast day of the Virgen de Fátima, the town’s patron saint. At the fiesta, visitors can sample more than 50 dishes made with chestnuts. The selection may vary from one edition to another; check the relevant event dates before your trip.

Another local tradition is the revived Cruces de Mayo. At the Mirador de la Cruz, the cross is decorated each year with flowers and handmade ornaments. La Cruz is also a recreational area for Pujerra’s residents, where the Día de la Cruz is celebrated. Chestnuts therefore shape not only the landscape and the museum’s theme, but also a festival featuring tastings. The celebration at the Mirador de la Cruz is a separate occasion in local tradition.

Legend of King Wamba

An oral legend handed down in Pujerra places King Wamba’s encounter with a royal delegation near the Molino de Capilla. It should be understood as local tradition, not as a verified biographical fact. There is also a monument to King Wamba in Pujerra. The legend and the monument offer two different ways to engage with the figure: a recounted encounter and a memorial in the town.
