Atajate lies in the Serranía de Ronda and brings together local history and mountainous landscapes: Baroque church architecture, historic buildings and wine tradition form a cultural focal point. The area also offers walking trails through the mountain landscapes around the Valle del Genal. This gives you a range of themes to consider when planning your trip—from traces of the past to specific outdoor activities.

Buildings and Historic Traces

The Iglesia de San José, also known as the Iglesia de San Roque, is a Baroque church dating from the 18th century; it was remodelled in the 19th century. The Cruz de Piedra is one of Atajate’s oldest buildings. The public washhouse, Lavadero Público de Atajate, was built in 1932 and is considered an example of the town’s vernacular architecture. Compared with the church’s older history, the washhouse marks a specific construction date in the 20th century.

The historic fortifications also point to different functions and locations. On the hill in Atajate known as “El Castillo,” an Arab fortress stood beside the old road from Ronda to Algeciras, La Línea and Gibraltar. The Torre de Santa Cruz controlled the route from Ubrique to Atajate as well as the nearby irrigated fields. Its grounds contain numerous archaeological remains from prehistoric, Roman and Arab times. A path leads to the tower, which is accessible on foot.

The Museo Abierto al Vino offers another way to learn about local history: texts, illustrations and tools show how the wine that is important to Atajate is made. This allows the wine tradition to be explored as a distinct theme alongside the buildings and archaeological traces.

Mosto, Wine and Local Specialities

The Fiesta del Mosto is celebrated in Atajate every year on the last Saturday in November. Mosto made from various grape varieties is distributed free of charge to residents and visitors. The date gives trip planning a clear seasonal focus; check the details of that year’s programme before travelling, as the exact format may change.

Queso de almendra is also one of Atajate’s culinary specialities. Together with the Fiesta del Mosto, it reflects a local culinary focus, while the Museo Abierto al Vino centres on the winemaking process. These are distinct themes: a named speciality, an annual festival and an introduction to winemaking.

Walking Trails and Via Ferrata

If you’d like to combine your stay with time outdoors in the mountains, walking trails can be found around the Valle del Genal. The region’s Ronda hiking network includes the PR-A 229 between Alpandeire and Atajate. The named places give the route a specific geographical reference; the Vía Ferrata Atajate, by contrast, is a separate via ferrata option featuring a series of notable obstacles.

The via ferrata starts with a short overhanging section and a traverse, then crosses a first monkey bridge. Its standout feature is a long Tibetan bridge. Guided via ferrata tours are offered in Atajate, among other places; availability may change. Before planning, also check the latest route conditions and equipment requirements, as these can change. This makes it possible to distinguish the town’s cultural focus from more active tour planning, without having to combine the two in a set itinerary.
