Discover Alpandeire’s history through its landmarks and routes: the parish church houses the baptismal font where Fray Leopoldo was baptised, while the Casa Natal illustrates village life in the second half of the 19th century. There are also archaeological remains, festivals held on recurring dates and routes with specific planning information. This lets you organise culture, festival dates and walks according to your interests and the time of year you travel.

Village history, church and archaeological sites

The present-day village of Alpandeire dates back to the 8th century. It was one of the first places in the SerranĂa de Ronda to be fortified by Muslims; the influence of Andalusian-Arab culture can still be seen in its street layout. The parish church was built in the 18th century. Many groups of pilgrims visit it from across Andalusia. The church houses the baptismal font where Fray Leopoldo was baptised. The Baroque chapel of San Roque contains paintings from that period.

Archaeological finds at Cerro de Castillejos are located within the municipality of Alpandeire. Chalcolithic dolmens have been discovered in the Encinas Borrachas area. Together with the history of the church, these sites span a period from early archaeological remains to 18th-century buildings. The archaeological sites and religious buildings represent different aspects of the village’s history.

Fray Leopoldo and his birthplace

The Casa Natal de Fray Leopoldo is furnished to show what life in Alpandeire was like in the second half of the 19th century. Its rooms include Fray Leopoldo’s bedroom, his parents’ bedroom, a simple living room, a small chapel and a central courtyard. The layout ranges from individual rooms to shared areas of the house.

The Ruta de Fray Leopoldo also passes through Alpandeire: it runs through Jimera de Líbar, Atajate and Alpandeire, following the route Fray Leopoldo took from Jimera de Líbar railway station via Atajate and through Audalázar to Alpandeire. In 2025, the route was maintained and in use. If you are planning to walk it today, check current trail conditions locally.

In 2013, the section of the Ruta de Fray Leopoldo in Alpandeire was marked with information boards and footprints in the street surface, leading to the birthplace and the church. Check the current condition of the markers locally before relying on them for navigation.

Festivals and when to visit

The Fiestas de San Roque take place on the weekend closest to 16 August and include two processions through the village. Niño del Huerto is a traditional celebration held on Easter Sunday. The festival of the Virgen del Rosario is celebrated on 7 October. The three occasions therefore fall around Easter, mid-August and October. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the current programme before travelling: annual arrangements may vary.

Walking routes and landscape

The Sendero de los Huertos passes through agricultural areas and traditional gardens, through landscapes rich in water and alongside irrigation channels. Several climbs and changes in elevation characterise the route. It is not recommended for people with limited mobility; take this into account when choosing your route and check current trail conditions.

A linear route between Atajate and Alpandeire connects the Sendero de los Huertos with stage five of the Gran Senda de la SerranĂa de Ronda (GR 141). It is ten kilometres long; allow about four and a half hours for the walk. These details help with planning your time, while the Sendero de los Huertos route description provides additional information about the terrain and accessibility.

The wider landscape extends beyond the individual routes: in the Valle del Genal, extensive chestnut forests form the Bosque de Cobre, which surrounds, among other places, Alpandeire and other white villages. The forest offers another perspective on the landscape in which the village is set, although it is not confined to the municipality of Alpandeire.
