Periana is surrounded by fruit fields and olive groves; the first stage of the GR-242 also begins in the town centre. It leads from Periana to AlcaucĂn. When choosing where to stay, different interests may therefore influence your decision: hiking trails, the history of olive oil or historic sites.

Olive Landscapes and Trails

The GR-242 has a clearly marked starting point in the town centre. A different perspective on olives is offered by the I Ruta de los Olivos Milenarios de Periana, which aims to share the history of the “Verdial de Vélez-Málaga” olive trees. The route ends at the Cooperativa Olivarera San Isidro. Check this endpoint locally before setting out.

The GR 249 also passes through a landscape shaped by olive trees. Its Periana section runs through centuries-old olive groves; traditional dry-stone walls and kilometres of small albarradas, which moderate the slope of the land, lie between the plots. At kilometre 22.6, the trail enters Periana alongside the archaeological site of CapellanĂa, which is more than two millennia old. Stage 08 ends at the southern entrance to the town, near Vereda de Cantillana, where it meets the first houses. Trail details may change, so it is advisable to check locally.

The route information provides different points of reference for planning: for the GR-242, the town centre and AlcaucĂn are named as the start and destination; for the GR 249, the focus is on olive landscapes, the archaeological site and the southern entrance to the town. This makes it possible to compare each route description with your own interest in landscape or history, without assuming a connection between the routes.

The History of Olive Oil and Local Tradition

In MondrĂłn, an olive-oil-producing village six kilometres from Periana, the Museo del Aceite de MondrĂłn preserves historical methods of olive-oil production. Visitors can see old millstones and other equipment. Admission is free, and visitors can also buy oil from the olive mill. Confirm visiting arrangements before your visit.

The Día del Aceite Verdial takes place every spring in Periana and is recognised as an event of provincial tourist interest in Málaga. During the festival, visitors can see traditional olive-oil-making equipment at the two local cooperatives, including millstones, presses and capacho mats. The programme includes a traditional molinero breakfast of bread, cod, green beans and Verdial olive oil. As the date varies each year, it is advisable to check the current programme.

Baths, Archaeology and Architecture

Nearby, in Baños de Vilo, there is a bath described as an Arab bath, 2.5 kilometres from Periana and just over 610 metres above sea level. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Balneario de Baños de Vilo was considered one of Andalusia’s most important spa resorts. This historical significance does not indicate whether it is currently operating; check current access conditions before visiting.

The Poza de Vilo features a surviving pool edge with a surround carved from stone more than a thousand years ago. The water is described as sulphurous, magnesium-calcium-rich and nitrogenous; its temperature remains constant at 21°C. This description is not medical advice.

The town’s architectural history can also be seen at specific sites. The Iglesia de San Isidro Labrador in Periana was built in the Neo-Mudéjar style after the earthquake. The Antiguo Lavadero Municipal is in the town centre, on Calle Cerco, a few metres from Plaza de la Fuente. Today, it serves as a drinking-water supply and is also a peaceful, picturesque waterside spot; local conditions may change.

The former washhouse recalls the social role of communal washing places. In Periana, the old tradition of carrying water home from the spring in botijos also continues. For those interested in archaeology, Cerro de CapellanĂa offers another link to the past: evidence of settlement spans the Middle Neolithic to the 1st century AD.
