If you do not want to reduce Mengibar’s history to a single period, there are several concrete points of interest: Roman Iliturgi, the surviving tower of the former castle, Renaissance architecture and topics related to olive oil. The landscape and recurring festivals complete the picture. When planning, it is worth considering these themes separately: local history, museum visits and nature offer different points of interest.

Iliturgi and the surviving castle tower

The Torre del Homenaje of the former castle is listed as a protected Bien de Interés Cultural monument; the protection listing dates from 25 June 1985. The tower has been restored and can be visited. Check the visiting arrangements before your trip. Around the beginning of the Common Era, the Roman city of Iliturgi on Cerro Maquiz developed into one of the largest cities in the upper Guadalquivir area and an important market for land and river trade.

The Centro de Interpretación Iliturgi is located in the Casa Palacio. A tour there uses three-dimensional visual and interactive technologies to present Iberian-Roman history. More than 50 archaeological objects from Maquiz date from the 1st century BC to the 4th or 5th century AD. The finds presented include documented remains of the siege and destruction of Iliturgi, as well as monumental remains of its fortifications. The architectural traces add to the picture: the city had an aqueduct that supplied large cisterns still visible today; to the south was a paved square measuring more than 1,000 square metres.

Renaissance architecture and historic impressions

The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol offers a glimpse into another chapter of the town’s history. The church is a Renaissance architectural landmark in the historic centre. Despite later alterations, it retains the character of the late 16th century; strong influences are attributed to Vandelvira, Francisco del Castillo “El Viejo” and Alonso Barba. This makes architectural history a distinct theme alongside the Roman finds.

The Arco de Jano, also known as “Ianus Augustus”, is located near Mengibar, close to the Guadalquivir and the Camino de los Romanos. The monument was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2019. If you would like to explore the historic centre, you can also consider the free guided tours offered by the “La Torre” cultural and tourist information point. Check dates and reservation options in advance.

Olive oil and landscape

The Museo Terra Oleum focuses on a different theme. Its permanent exhibition uses interactive modules, audiovisual media, machinery and 3D video mapping to present olive growing, olive oil and sustainability. Olive oil production technology and Mediterranean cuisine are also among the topics. The oils presented there can be tasted in the Oleoteca. This offers two distinct ways to explore the area: its cultural history and the production of a locally important product.

For nature lovers, the river landscapes offer another perspective: gallery forests line the Guadalquivir and its tributaries, the Guadalbullón and Guadalimar, within the municipality. Cerro Albariza is a natural viewpoint overlooking the Guadalquivir Valley.

Festivals and practical planning

The events calendar also offers concrete guidance. The Romería de “La Malena” takes place on the second Sunday in May in honour of the patron saint, Santa María Magdalena. Pilgrims travel to the hermitage on foot, in carriages or on horseback. On 3 May, the Cruces de Mayo are celebrated in honour of the Holy Cross: residents decorate streets, squares and courtyards with handmade crosses. Since 2015, on the third Saturday in November, Mengibar has commemorated an episode from the funeral procession of Isabel I of Castile with a theatrical historical reenactment. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific event dates in advance.

Mengibar has regular bus services and a railway station called “La Artichuela”, with medium-distance services. Check connections before travelling. When choosing a hotel, your preferred focus for the trip can help guide you: the history of Iliturgi, architecture, olive oil or the river landscape. The sights, festivals and transport connections mentioned here provide different planning options without prescribing a set itinerary.
