Huelma combines a historic old town with prominent buildings, an Iberian-themed connection and part of the Sierra Mágina Natural Park. This mix can be divided into cultural history and landscape: the old town, castle and church represent different stages of architectural history, while the challenging mountain route to Pico Mágina and Pico Miramundos offers a different focus. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether local history, archaeological heritage or a mountain hike will be the deciding factor.

Old Town, Castle and Religious Architecture

Huelma’s historic old town is characterised by white houses below the remains of the castle. In 1971, it was designated a historic-artistic ensemble. This combination of houses and castle remains gives the town’s history a tangible setting: the castle is not just a separate structure, but part of the historic townscape.

Huelma Castle, also known as Alburquerque Castle, has a square ground plan. Four cylindrical towers stand at the corners; connecting walls and an entrance with a round arch complete the complex. Two building phases overlap in its history: the castle was probably built in the first half of the 16th century over an earlier Muslim castle. Wall remains and the large cistern inside have survived from this older complex. The cautious dating and the surviving features go together: the present-day castle is assigned to a later period, while the wall remains and cistern point to its predecessor.

Another chapter in the history of architecture is the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in the 16th century. It is considered a remarkable example of religious architecture from that period and is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. Under the direction of Diego de Siloe, Francisco del Castillo el Viejo, Andrés de Vandelvira and Francisco del Castillo, el Mozo, contributed to its construction. The church thus combines an architectural classification with the history of its artistic execution.

The Santuario de Ntra. Sra. de la Fuensanta is located at Pago de la Virgen on the A-324 towards Cambil, within the municipality of Huelma. This location identifies the sanctuary’s precise setting and adds another point of reference alongside the other religious buildings.

Iberian Heritage and Events

Cortijo Pajarillo is an Iberian archaeological site dating from the 4th century BC. Huelma is also a stop on the tourist route “Viaje al tiempo de los íberos”. Alongside medieval and modern-era buildings, this offers a much older historical layer and a dedicated way to explore Iberian history.

The calendar of events includes a range of occasions. Huelma’s Semana Santa includes a procession with tronos. EXPOHUELMA takes place every year: as the trade fair of the Sierra Mágina Natural Park, it brings together numerous exhibitors and visitors. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates and programme for the relevant year in advance.

Landscape and Mountain Hike

The northern third of Huelma’s municipal area lies within the Sierra Mágina Natural Park. The Jandulilla River also shapes the area’s geography: it crosses a significant part of the municipality from south to north, dividing that part into roughly equal areas. These details describe different aspects of the landscape—the location of part of the municipality within the natural park and the river’s course through part of it.

The challenging mountain route to Pico Mágina and nearby Pico Miramundos lies in the heart of the natural park. It begins on a forest track, with the final section following a high-mountain trail. At 2,167 metres, Pico Mágina is the highest point in the province of Jaén. Both the changing types of trail and the summit destination, as well as the stated difficulty, are therefore important in understanding the route. This mountain hike offers a different focus from Huelma’s architectural and local history and can help you decide in advance what kind of excursion suits your trip.
