Olive groves shape the landscape of Arjona, while archaeological collections, sacred history and recurring festivals give the town a range of cultural highlights. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether you are particularly interested in history, the rural surroundings or a specific event date.
Olive Landscapes and Views across the Campiña
Gentle hills with moderate slopes shape the municipality, which is predominantly agricultural. Olive groves account for the largest share of the land, followed by grain fields. Three ecosystems can also be distinguished: olive groves, stream banks with riverside vegetation, and field margins and boundary strips. Arjona therefore has several forms of cultural landscape side by side, not just olive cultivation.
The Mirador Casco Antiguo de Arjona is located at a former fortified site. From there, the view stretches across the entire western Campiña of Jaén province; visibility depends on conditions. The viewpoint combines a view of the landscape with the site’s historical significance.
Archaeology, Sacred History and Art in Town
The Museo arqueológico de Arjona opened on 22 November 2012. Its collection comprises almost 3,000 objects, from fossils to pieces of modern archaeology. A chronological tour traces the prehistoric and historical periods in Arjona’s development. The collection and tour offer two distinct ways to explore the town: through its place in history and through a broad range of archaeological objects.
The Santuario de los Santos y de las Sagradas Reliquias was built between 1617 and 1619 to house the presumed remains of the martyrs Bonoso and Maximiano, as well as the remains of more than 3,000 early Christian martyrs. The building thus combines a clearly dated history with its religious purpose.
In the historic town centre, Parque del Olivar is next to Iglesia del Carmen. Its large artistic features take olive groves as their theme, including trunks with olive leaves, clusters of olives, wrought-iron olive trees and a monumental fountain. The park thus gives Arjona’s agricultural character a distinctive artistic expression.
Festivals and Local Cuisine
Ruta de la Tapa Nazarà takes place every November as part of Noviembre Cultural, organised by the town council. Local cafés, bars and restaurants prepare a variety of dishes as individual tapas and compete in several categories. Participating establishments may change, so check the programme for the relevant year before your trip.
Fiestasantos takes place every year from 11 to 24 August. The procession of images and relics of the patron saints on 21 August is the main event. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific programme in advance.
Veladas NazarĂes is also a recurring event. The 2026 programme included a medieval souk with artisans and a food area, as well as “El Alfarero,” an educational, participatory pottery workshop for all ages. These examples show that the programme can include both market and food areas and a hands-on activity.
Routes and Planning Your Visit
On the Ruta literaria Juan Eslava Galán, the guide reads excerpts from the writer’s works at the monuments and places visited. The route is listed as one kilometre long and lasting two hours and 30 minutes. As details of the tour may change, it is best to confirm current arrangements before your visit.
Oficina de Turismo Rey Alhamar offers a wide range of guided tours, walking routes, musical performances and other activities. As offerings may change, check what is available for your travel dates.
Centro HĂpico y de Oleoturismo aims to combine an introduction to olive oil culture with an interest in the world of horses. Its 48,000 m² olive oil mill has been prepared for tourist visits. Confirm current access to the site separately before planning a visit.
August and November offer two different reasons to choose your travel dates: Fiestasantos takes place in August, while Ruta de la Tapa NazarĂ takes place in November. Check the relevant programme before choosing a hotel for your stay.
