A neo-Gothic hospital, an archaeological museum in a Renaissance building and six PR trails give Linares a variety of attractions. Visitors planning a stay can explore cultural history, the heritage of Cástulo and trails through the municipality’s landscapes. When planning, it helps to distinguish between a specific audio-guided tour and the wider trail network.

Buildings and Collections in Linares

The Hospital de San José y San Raimundo is a neo-Gothic building constructed between 1904 and 1917. Its crypt contains a marble and bronze mausoleum created by Lorenzo Collault Valera. The mortal remains of the Marquises of Linares rest there. The building, crypt and mausoleum combine architectural history with a tangible memorial to the Marquises of Linares.

El Pósito also tells the story of a different era: the building dates from the 18th century and serves as a tourist and exhibition space. It presents, in chronological order, a collection donated by an artist. The exhibits include the artist’s discography and awards, as well as posters, films, costumes, graphic documents and memorabilia. The collection offers a distinctive focus alongside the city’s archaeological themes. A particularly beautiful Plateresque altarpiece is also part of Linares’ art-historical heritage.

Cástulo: From the Palaeolithic to the Abandonment of the Settlement

The Museo Arqueológico Monográfico de Cástulo explores the history of Cástulo in six rooms, from the Palaeolithic to the gradual abandonment of the settlement after the Christian conquest. This span of time makes the museum a different way to explore history from the buildings in the city. It is housed in a distinguished 16th-century Renaissance and noble residence that belonged to the Dávalos Biedma family, who lived in Linares.

The archaeological site of Cástulo is open to visitors. A visitor reception centre provides access to the archaeological treasures of the Iberian-Roman settlement. The Centro de Interpretación del Paisaje Minero, meanwhile, is located in the former loading area of the Estación de Madrid. This brings archaeological history and mining heritage together as distinct themes.

City Walks and Trails Through the Landscape

For exploring on foot, there is an audio-guided experience with three tours through Linares and its cultural heritage. One specific tour, “Linares, de villa a ciudad,” is 3 kilometres long, takes 4 hours and is rated easy. Linares audio guides are available in Spanish and English and include maps and headphones.

The PR trail network, by contrast, comprises six trails covering a total of 57.4 kilometres. It is suitable for hiking, long-distance running, mountain biking and horse riding. The trails showcase Linares’ mining heritage and some of the most beautiful landscapes in the municipality. The figures therefore refer to different scales: 3 kilometres and 4 hours apply to the named audio-guided tour, while 57.4 kilometres is the length of the entire six-trail PR network.

El Piélago, a natural monument, lies in the northern part of the municipality. For those interested in Linares’ landscape, it offers another perspective alongside the history of Cástulo and the mining heritage.

Local Traditions

The Santa Bárbara festival is held in Linares every year. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the dates for the relevant year. There is also a local dining custom: when you order a drink, the establishment serves a small complimentary dish. As establishments and offerings can vary, it is worth checking what is served locally.

Whether you focus on architectural history, the chronological story of Cástulo or getting active on the PR trails, Linares offers a range of clearly defined themes. A short audio-guided city tour and the extensive trail network are not interchangeable options: they differ both in scale and in the way you explore.
