Aldeaquemada combines a distinctive protected landscape with a town whose historic center has preserved its original layout. Landscape and Protected Area
The Paraje Natural Cascada de Cimbarra natural area covers 534 hectares within the municipality of Aldeaquemada. Its boundaries coincide with those of the ZEPA and ZEC designations; both are part of the Natura 2000 network. Protection was established in several stages: in 1989, the area was designated a natural area under Law 2/1989, then a ZEPA in 2002 and a ZEC in 2015. Thus, alongside its landscape features, the area is defined by several types of protected status.
Culture and Historic Buildings
The historic center of Aldeaquemada has preserved its urban layout and distinctive monumental heritage from the Sierra Morena colonies. One notable historic building is the grain store, built in 1792. It replaced an older building, served as a grain store to regulate supplies, and occupies an entire city block on a monumental scale.
The church’s history can also be traced through specific dates: it opened on January 8, 1771. Before that, a house served as a temporary oratory after being blessed on February 8, 1768. Aldeaquemada is also one of the municipalities in the province of JaĂ©n that contains sites belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage property Arte Rupestre del Arco Mediterráneo de la PenĂnsula IbĂ©rica.

The Sendero Arroyo MartĂn PĂ©rez, by contrast, is a linear route: it is 1.1 kilometers long, with an estimated walking time of 40 minutes and the same medium-to-low difficulty rating. For much of the way, the Arroyo MartĂn PĂ©rez trail runs parallel to a small mountain stream through riverside vegetation. Along the route, it passes the Cascada del Cimbarrillo and Charco del Negrillo. This trail therefore links the route with two named natural sites.
The Sendero Cerro Monuera takes more time: this loop trail is 8.7 kilometers long, has an estimated walking time of 2 hours and 45 minutes, and is rated medium difficulty. It circles the hill completely and passes through varied vegetation and landscape across terrain that has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The three trails therefore offer distinctly different time commitments. Walking times are estimates; check trail conditions locally before setting out.
Festivals and Culinary Events
The Fiesta de San AntĂłn takes place on January 17. Celebrations include a procession, a communal bonfire, and traditional foods such as bread rings flavored with MatalaĂşva. As this is a recurring tradition, confirm the program for your travel year in advance.
The Jornadas Gastronómicas of Aldeaquemada take place every year in May. Here too, it is advisable to confirm the specific dates for that year’s event before traveling.
