Segura de la Sierra brings together a distinctive history of castles and settlement with the landscape of the Sierra de Segura. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide what to focus on: historic buildings, vibrant culture, or trails and views in the nature park. The attractions vary considerably—from the Torre del Homenaje to designated routes and the summit of El Yelmo.

Castle, Gates and Architectural History

From the 13th to the 15th century, the fortress of Segura de la Sierra was central to the formation of an important territorial and jurisdictional unit of Castile. Castillo de Segura and its historic settlement are designated as a Paisaje Pintoresco and Conjunto HistĂłrico-ArtĂstico. The Torre del Homenaje is 18.43 metres high, has three floors and a terrace.

Sections of the walls are visible outside the fortress too: in the lower part of town, along the climbs from Puerta Nueva to the Castillo, on the walls descending from the Castillo to the bullring, and along the outer enclosure of the Alcazaba. Puerta Catena, of Arab origin, and the town wall were jointly designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1985. The town’s history is therefore shaped not only by the castle, but also by its gates and stretches of wall.

Built in 1517 opposite the church, Fuente Imperial illustrates the transition from Gothic to Renaissance architecture. The coat of arms of Charles V is depicted on a double-headed winged eagle. Another glimpse into architectural history is the Iglesia de los Jesuitas: built between 1583 and 1593, it now serves as a venue for events and exhibitions, hosting a range of activities. The parish church houses a 14th-century Gothic alabaster sculpture of the Virgen de la Peña with the Child.

Living Traditions and Music

Bolos Serranos is a living traditional game passed down from generation to generation and particularly associated with Segura de la Sierra. It is played in the Valle and Alta montaña forms. This tradition complements the town’s stone-built historical landmarks with a cultural practice that continues to be passed on.

Música en Segura is an established festival. A 2026 presentation reports that, over the preceding twelve years, it had held almost 200 concerts and welcomed more than 80,000 visitors. The 2026 edition’s programme included concerts in the Iglesia de los Jesuitas, as well as the classic Concierto del Amanecer and Excursión Musical formats. These examples relate to the 2026 programme year; future programmes may vary.

Sierra Landscapes and Views

Segura de la Sierra lies in the heart of the Sierra de Segura, which is part of the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas. Valleys, karst landscapes, gorges, mountains and plateaus define the surrounding area. El Yelmo summit stands at 1,809 metres. From there, views stretch across the nature park’s forests, to distant peaks in Albacete and Granada, the plains of La Mancha, Segura de la Sierra and the Embalse del Tranco reservoir.

The geological formation Serie Jurásico-Cretácico de El Yelmo is also visible from the Mirador de Segura de la Sierra. It has a synclinal structure and a varied sequence of marine and continental sedimentary rocks from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Alongside the sweeping landscape views, geological formations are another feature to look out for.

Trails and Local Planning

Cycling and walking are permitted on the Vía Verde de Segura, although rules specific to each section may apply. The section in Jaén province is 27.1 kilometres long and passes through the municipality of Segura de la Sierra. It is distinct from the 42-kilometre scenic route Segura de la Sierra–Río Madera, which begins and ends in the town. These distances refer to different routes, not to walking or cycling times.

In January 2026, the intermodal hub was reported as complete. It is located opposite the municipal swimming pool and next to the access to the Castillo, and forms part of a network of hiking and cycling routes in the nature park. Information about visitor arrangements may be updated by the relevant authorities; check it before use if needed.

Air sports are also part of the local offering: the EstaciĂłn de vuelo libre El Yelmo faces west and has an elevation difference of around 1,000 metres. Flights are possible year-round when weather conditions are suitable and local rules are followed.

When looking for a hotel, it helps to weigh up the different attractions: the castle, gates and churches offer insights into the area’s architecture and history; the Vía Verde, scenic route and El Yelmo each offer a different way to experience outdoor activity and the landscape. The festival is another option, subject to its programme for the relevant year. This makes it easier to plan around the things you are most interested in during your stay.
