Trigueros brings together a range of cultural highlights: the architectural history of two churches, the distinctive construction of the Dolmen de Soto, recurring festivals and a brickmaking craft that is still practiced today. When planning your trip, it helps to consider historic buildings, outdoor activities and festival dates separately, along with their respective conditions. This way, you can focus on the aspects that suit your stay and check dates for a festival visit more closely.

The Dolmen de Soto and visiting conditions

The Dolmen de Soto has a covered gallery that is 21.50 metres long and faces east. It consists of 67 orthostats—upright stone slabs—with engravings and paintings. Its length, orientation and decorated stones give the structure a clearly recognisable architectural form.

Visits are possible only with a reservation made in advance. Self-guided, guided and group visits are available. If you want to visit the dolmen, reserve ahead of time and check the visitor information for your planned date. A reservation is an essential requirement for visiting and should therefore be factored into your plans early.

Churches with distinct architectural layers

The Iglesia de San Antonio Abad is a Gothic-Mudéjar building. It was rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and its façade and bell tower are neoclassical in style. The chapels of the Gospel and Epistle also contain 15th-century frescoes. The church brings together features from different periods and styles: its Gothic-Mudéjar character, its post-earthquake reconstruction and the neoclassical design of its façade and tower.

The Colegio de Santa Catalina offers a different focus on architectural history. It was founded towards the end of the second third of the 16th century. The church of the Colegio is still standing, and its Venetian Renaissance style is particularly evident in its exterior. In November 2008, the Colegio was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). If you want to compare architectural styles, this offers a different emphasis from the Iglesia de San Antonio Abad: the focus here is on Venetian Renaissance and the exterior of the surviving church.

Festivals and their dates

The patron saint festivities of San Antonio Abad take place on the last weekend of January, provided the following Monday and Tuesday do not fall in February. The festivities include a novena, the blessing of animals and the Tercia procession. The calendar condition matters when planning: if you are timing your trip around this festival, check whether those weekdays still fall in January in the relevant year.

For the “Las Candelas” festival, the first sheaves are gathered from the fields after the Christmas season ends. This tradition is tied to the period after Christmas, but no specific date is given.

The traditional Capeas run from late August to early September and last a full week. Encierros take place in the morning, followed by Capeas in the afternoon. The annual programme may vary. If you want to visit specifically for this festival week, include the dates of the events in your plans.

Crafts and outdoor routes

Traditional brickmaking is still practiced in Trigueros. The bricks are air-dried, the moulds are worked by hand and traditional kilns are used. Production therefore involves several specific stages—from working the moulds to firing—and preserves the traditional methods described here.

The VĂa Verde Los Molinos de Agua can be used on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback or in a wheelchair. These different ways of using the route are explicitly mentioned; it is not limited to cyclists. Pilar de la Media Legua is a recreation area with picnic spots for resting. The two options appeal to different interests: getting active on the VĂa Verde or taking a break at the picnic spots.
