A waterfall more than 15 metres high, literary trail stops, and an astronomical circular route give Santa Ana la Real its distinctive character. The town lies in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, which forms part of the Dehesas de Sierra Morena Biosphere Reserve. Depending on your interests, you can focus on nature, themed trails, or the town’s architectural history.
Themed Trails and Route Lengths
The Bosque de las Letras is a cultural tourism route around Santa Ana la Real. It is about five kilometres long and starts and ends in the town. Literary texts are placed at several reading stops in the natural surroundings. The route thus combines exercise with reading, while making the landscape a setting for a cultural theme.
The Ruta AstronĂłmica has a different focus: the circular route is approximately 2.5 kilometres long. Information panels with text and images introduce the solar system, night-time navigation, and how to identify important constellations. QR codes supplement the panels with audio information; a granite table is intended for telescope observations. In terms of length, the Ruta AstronĂłmica is approximately half as long as the Bosque de las Letras, and their content also differs significantly. Local trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
The Sendero de Las Coscojas (SL-A 284) is also a circular route. It starts and ends in La Presa, a hamlet in Santa Ana la Real, and passes through chestnut woodland and along paths among holm oaks and cork oaks. The El Risco de Levante trail begins near the Fuente de los Tres Caños. Three symmetrically arranged spouts are set into the fountain’s hexagonal glazed-ceramic body; it also has a round stone basin.
Waterfall and Trail Conditions
The Chorros de JoyarancĂłn is a waterfall more than 15 metres high, with its strongest flow after rain. The described access route begins at Puente de Los Casares: from there, cross the river twice, then follow a path through pine and chestnut trees. Rain can also affect the river crossings. So check conditions before setting out, especially if it has rained recently.
The Plaza, Architectural History, and Visitor Information
The Iglesia Parroquial stands in Plaza de España and dates from the mid-18th century. As a historic building, it is assigned Protection Level I and is protected as a heritage site. The ensemble comprising the church and Plaza de España, along with its surroundings, is also protected. The Hornos de Cal are designated as ethnographic cultural assets for protection, interpretation, and enhancement; the state of preservation of some individual lime kilns may be limited.
The municipality provides two Joëlette all-terrain wheelchairs for visitors with reduced mobility to use on its routes and trails. Ask in advance about booking conditions and whether volunteers are needed to accompany you. A Bosque de las Letras app is available for blind visitors. NaviLens codes are provided on the information panels for the Bosque de las Letras, as well as the Ruta Geológica and the Ruta Botánica. Digital aids may depend on device compatibility and coverage.
