Higuera De La Sierra combines a protected historic town centre with cultural attractions and trails leading to water features and scenic viewpoints. The designated historic centre is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Conjunto Histórico category. Another important cultural landmark is the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos, a tradition dating back to 1918.

Local History and the Cabalgata Tradition

During the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos, residents portray scenes from the childhood of Jesus and become biblical figures for a few hours. This gives the tradition a special connection to the local community. For visitors interested in religious traditions and cultural heritage, it is a distinctive cultural highlight alongside the town’s buildings.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián was inaugurated in 1746 and houses more than a hundred works of art. Historic buildings beyond this church also shape the townscape: Higuera De La Sierra has numerous buildings from the early 20th century, including manor houses that preserve features of the region’s vernacular architecture. The town’s cultural heritage thus extends from its protected historic centre and church to the homes and manor houses of this later period.

Museo Martes Santo: Distillation and Architecture

The Museo Martes Santo is dedicated to artisanal distillation and is housed in a building designed by Aníbal González. The museum includes more than 500 square metres of exhibition space, as well as gardens and organic kitchen gardens. The building thus combines a clearly defined theme with a distinctive architectural connection. Tastings of all products are offered at the Museo Martes Santo. If you are planning a visit, check the latest information about tastings and access in advance.

Water and Viewpoints Along the Trails

Higuera De La Sierra is one of the municipalities in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park. One specific starting point for an outing is the Camino de las Tobas: it begins where the trail meets the HU-8132 provincial road, which connects Higuera De La Sierra with Zufre. This starting point is about 1.5 kilometres from Higuera De La Sierra. Check trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

At the Camino de las Tobas, there is a small cave from which water flows down as a little waterfall; the flow can vary by season. At the foot of the cave is a small viewpoint overlooking the surroundings of the Barranco del Burro.

Another viewpoint is located at the summit of the Sierra de Santa Bárbara, where an unfinished hermitage serves as a lookout over Higuera De La Sierra. A hiking trail also leads from Higuera De La Sierra to Puerto de La Umbría. It runs along the sun-facing side of the Sierra de Santa Bárbara and between dry-stone walls and olive groves. A circular trail leads from Higuera De La Sierra towards El Charcón.

The features described offer several points of reference when choosing a hike: at the Camino de las Tobas, the cave, waterfall and view of the surroundings of the Barranco del Burro take centre stage; the hermitage offers a view over the town; and dry-stone walls and olive groves characterise the route description for the trail to Puerto de La UmbrĂa. Those considering a circular walk can choose the trail towards El CharcĂłn. This makes it possible to compare outings according to their specific destinations and landscape features.
