The Fuente de los Doce Caños is next to Plaza del Coso in the centre of Fuenteheridos; the Múrtiga River also rises here. The spring, square and river source provide a clear starting point for exploring the town: water can be considered both as part of the townscape and for its importance to the water supply and garden irrigation.

Water in the Townscape

The Fuente de los Doce Caños has twelve outlets and supplies around two million litres of water every day for the town’s water supply and garden irrigation. Another link to traditional water use can be seen at Paseo de los Poetas: the area, with restored irrigation channels, cascades and ponds, has been designed as a place to stroll and relax. The “lievas” distribute water from the spring across El Ejido, La Canal and Navalonguilla. In this way, the spring, landscaped water features and garden irrigation are connected in different parts of the town.

Churches, Squares and Heritage

The Iglesia Parroquial del Espíritu Santo is an 18th-century Neoclassical church. It was rebuilt after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. Plaza del Coso is also home to the Cruz de mármol, a monumental cross made from the well-known stone of Fuenteheridos’ quarries. It dates from May 1792.

The narrow, cobbled streets and vernacular-style houses also shape the town centre. Together, they form a harmonious, cohesive ensemble classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Other religious buildings include the Humilladero de la Verónica, a small open-air oratory. A bust of Christ stands in its small niche. The Púlpito del Espíritu Santo is a votive shrine dedicated to the Holy Trinity, on a small square beside the church’s front façade. Its design clearly evokes that of an open-air pulpit.

Museums and Local Language

The Museo del Léxico Serrano is dedicated to the vocabulary and typical expressions of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, presented in a graphic display. It can be visited during town hall opening hours. Check whether a visit is possible locally before planning a trip to the museum. The Museo de Fuenteheridos hosts temporary exhibitions, conferences, discussions and talks. As some programmes run for a limited time, check the relevant programme for specific dates.

Festivals, Chestnuts and Tradition

The Feria de la Castaña has been held continuously in Fuenteheridos since 1983. After the chestnut harvest, activities, games and tastings centred on chestnuts are part of the event. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, coordinate your visit with the event dates.

Another tradition is the Fiesta del chopo. It is one of the town’s oldest celebrations and takes place on the Saturday after Corpus Christi. Participants go to the poplar grove on the banks of the Múrtiga, cut down a poplar and carry it to a square in front of the parish church. The annual arrangements may vary, so check the dates and programme before your trip. The procession of the Virgen de la Fuente also links a celebration with the central spring: the image stops there, and the water is blessed.

Natural Park and Hiking Plans

Fuenteheridos is located in the centre of the Sierra de Aracena y los Picos de Aroche Natural Park. For hikers, the Sendero Fuenteheridos–Galaroza–Castaño del Robledo is one named option; owing to its distance, it is classified as difficult. This route rating may vary depending on conditions, so it is an important factor to consider when planning. During your stay, you can choose from a range of activities, including exploring the town’s history, water features and festival traditions, or taking on a route rated as challenging.
