From the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Blanca, the view stretches across an area defined by pine forests all the way to the sea. Villablanca can thus be discovered through two special aspects: the architecture of its churches and local traditions with set dates throughout the year. The buildings feature different architectural characteristics; dance, pilgrimage, and the Fiestas del Mercado add their own cultural highlights.

Church Architecture in Villablanca

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Blanca is a building in the Mudéjar style. Its interior is divided into three naves, separated by polygonal pillars. The style and layout describe different aspects of the building: the three naves and pillars form the interior’s layout, while Mudéjar identifies its architectural classification. The setting of the ermita also includes a view across the pine forests to the sea, bringing architecture and landscape together in one scene.

The Iglesia de San Sebastián offers a point of comparison. It was built in the 17th century and also has three naves, but with a basilica-style floor plan. Its design shows a certain Mudéjar influence; it also features broad arcades on Tuscan columns. The three-nave layout is a feature shared by both churches. They differ in the other forms described: at the ermita, polygonal pillars separate the naves, while at San Sebastián, the broad arcades and Tuscan columns are part of the design. The Mudéjar classification is also expressed differently: as a style at the ermita and as an influence at San Sebastián.

Dance, Pilgrimage, and Festivals

The Danza de los Palos is a traditional dance from Villablanca. It is performed exclusively by men and always by an odd number of dancers. The dance consists of nine Mudanzas and is accompanied by flute and tamboril. These characteristics offer a concrete guide to understanding the tradition: the odd number describes the group, the nine Mudanzas its structure, and the flute and tamboril the musical accompaniment.

The Fiestas del Mercado are a recurring event in July. They take place every year on the third weekend of July in the Barriada del Molino. The program includes exhibitions, food competitions, and displays of handcrafted products. Several kinds of activities are therefore offered side by side: exhibitions, competitions related to food, and insights into handcrafted goods. If you would like to plan your travel dates around a festival, you can make this July weekend a focal point of your plans.

In May, the Romería in honor of Our Lady of la Blanca gathers near the ermita. It takes place on the third Sunday in May. The festal huts are spread across the pilgrimage grounds in the pine forest. Compared with the Fiestas del Mercado, both the date and the setting are different: in May, the pilgrimage and the grounds in the pine forest shape the festival, while the July weekend features exhibitions, food competitions, and displays of handcrafted products. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the date before you travel.

Plan Your Stay

The two festival dates offer a clear guide when choosing when to travel: the Romería on the third Sunday in May or the Fiestas del Mercado on the third weekend of July. Regardless, the church architecture and the view from the ermita offer other ways to discover Villablanca. When planning, consider whether the architectural forms, the Danza de los Palos, the pilgrimage, or the market festivities are the biggest draw for you.
