In Veredas, trails through the surrounding area meet the distinctive Fandango and festival traditions of Las Veredas. For planning, it helps to know the specific differences: one circular route is described by its length and form, the drovers’ path connects three places, and the celebration at Cruz del Hoyo takes place on the second weekend in May.
Hiking trails: routes and trail features
The drovers’ path “Vereda de las Veredas a Calabazares” connects Las Veredas, Almonaster la Real and Calabazares. The Andalusian classification dated 16 July 2026 lists the entire route as walkable. For one section, the path runs parallel to the Barranco del Fresno, about 100 metres away on average, before reaching Las Veredas. This route therefore highlights both the connection between the three settlements and a precisely described section along the Barranco.
On the route from Las Veredas to Acebuche, the trail initially follows the HU-8107 road for about 350 metres. It then turns right onto a path that, according to the route description dated 16 July 2026, was signposted as a hiking trail, and crosses the Huelva–Zafra railway line through an underpass. The description thus provides specific guidance on the road section, turn-off and crossing.
The PR®-A 448 hiking trail, “Las Aldeas de Poniente,” passes through Las Veredas. The first section of the “Sendero Aldeas de Poniente” follows the old Camino Real de Mérida and passes through various ecosystems. The 2022 regional hiking guide also describes the “Sendero Almonaster y aldeas de Poniente” as an 11.7-kilometre circular route.
To choose based on trail features: the “Sendero Almonaster y aldeas de Poniente” is described by its length and circular format; the drovers’ path is notable for the places it connects and its walkability. If you are looking for a circular route with a stated distance, the 11.7-kilometre trail is clearly specified. If you want to follow the connection between Las Veredas, Almonaster la Real and Calabazares, the drovers’ path describes exactly that route.
Fandango and festival days
Las Veredas maintains its own variant of the Fandango de la Cruz, particularly the “repicao” fandango. The name “repicao” comes from striking the tambourine. This gives the village’s musical tradition its own named form—a distinctive cultural highlight alongside the hiking routes.
The Cruz del Hoyo de las Veredas is celebrated on the second weekend in May. At the celebration at Cruz del Hoyo, the serranas gather at around 6:30 p.m., sing their Coplas del Romero and begin a procession through the streets of Las Veredas. The approximate start time and timing in May provide a practical guide if you want to plan your visit around the celebration.
The “Encuentros Micológicos” have also been held in several editions. Dates documented for 2023 are 23 and 24 November, and 25 and 26 November. These dates refer to past events, not an assured annual recurrence. So if you plan to travel for an edition, check the dates for your travel year.
Village character and getting around
Traditional houses in Las Veredas are mostly single-storey and have an attic as well as an inner courtyard or garden. This architectural style is one of the village’s specifically noted features and adds an architectural detail to its cultural character.
Las Veredas can be reached via the same road that also leads to the hamlets of El Arroyo and Acebuches. This is a useful landmark for getting there: the road to both hamlets is the same one that leads to Las Veredas.
