A Gothic-Mudéjar parish church with restored murals and a municipal network of hiking trails with seven named routes offer two distinct ways to explore Hinojales: architecture and local history on the one hand, landscape and hiking on the other. The Ruta de la Paz also visits places associated with the history of the Spanish Civil War. You can choose the focus of your stay based on the subjects that interest you most.

Church and Frescoes in Hinojales

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Consolación is an Andalusian Gothic-Mudéjar parish church dating from the late 15th century. It is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural by the Consejería de Cultura of the Junta de Andalucía. The church has a square floor plan and three naves.

Among its distinctive features are the frescoes, which were discovered beneath the whitewash in 1967 and have been restored. They are believed to date from approximately 1490 to 1530. Art historians attribute the paintings to the groups “Maestro Gótico” and “Maestro Cuatrocentista de Hinojales.” The imagery includes the empty tomb, the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, the Last Supper and the Resurrection of Christ. There are also murals of several saints, including Thomas Aquinas, Bartholomew and Catherine. The church therefore offers an opportunity to explore its architectural features as well as the frescoes’ dating, artistic attribution and religious motifs.

Local History and the Ruta de la Paz

The Ruta de la Paz leads to places in Hinojales that were of great importance to the town during the Spanish Civil War. Signs and QR codes at marked points provide information about the route and its individual stops. Local history is therefore a focus of this trail in its own right, alongside the church’s cultural significance.

An ordinance published in 2011 also set out the schedule for the ritual Danza de la Virgen de la Tórtola in honour of the patron saint. According to the ordinance, the Virgin was to be collected on 30 April; on 1 May, the programme included a religious service and a municipal procession. The transfer to the hermitage was scheduled for the last Saturday in May. The small Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Tórtola is another architectural feature of the town, built in the Baroque style.

La Ribera and the Hiking Trails

La Ribera combines landscape features with a clear connection to water: it is a tributary of the La Ribera de Huelva. Its landscape includes old paved paths between ancient trees and stone walls. There is also water, dehesa pastureland, animals on land and in the water, amphibians and birds. This biological diversity is associated with the Sierra Morena and, in particular, the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche.

Hinojales’ municipal hiking trail network comprises seven named routes:

  • Hinojales-Camino Maragatos
  • Hinojales-Cueva del Moro
  • Hinojales-El Cerro Gordo
  • Hinojales-El Silo-La Corte-Hinojales
  • Hinojales-La Corte-Abrevaero-Hinojales
  • Hinojales-Rivera de Hinojales
  • Hinojales-Sierra el Rey

The Maragato trail covers approximately 5,600 metres to the Ribera de Hinojales and is rated as moderately difficult. These details provide a concrete reference when comparing hikes by distance and difficulty. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. The seven route names and the landscape described offer different starting points for planning: you can follow a named trail or explore La Ribera as a landscape featuring paved paths, trees and stone walls.
