Discover Calañas through its church architecture, historic mills, local music and traces of mining. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Gracia is a striking landmark: it stands in the old town at the highest point of the settlement and is visible from every point in the municipality. Calañas therefore offers a range of cultural and landscape themes to consider when choosing a destination, which you can weigh according to your interests.
Church and Market Hall: Architecture in the Townscape
The origins of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Gracia date back to the late 15th or early 16th century, giving it a history of more than five centuries. Its architecture brings together elements of Gothic Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Those interested in architectural history will find several styles combined in one building, rather than an example that can be attributed to just one period.
The Mercado Municipal de Abastos offers a different architectural perspective. The market hall was built in 1927 to a design by architect José María Pérez Carasa. Its eclectic design combines Andalusian regionalism with rationalist features. It is regarded as a distinctive and unique example of urban market hall architecture within its typology. Unlike the church, the emphasis here is on the combination of these two architectural features and the building’s special place within its building type.
Mining History in La Torerera
The Ruta Turística La Torera takes visitors to the former mining settlement, its facilities and the surrounding natural landscape. In La Torerera, remains survive around the mine shaft, offices, director’s house, houses for senior employees and chapel. There is also the casino, as well as workshops and warehouses at the underground factory galleries. These traces give the settlement its own historical focus.
The chronology is also part of the story: a pyrite mine was explored there from around 1911. A short period of operation from 1925 to 1931 was later followed by an underground explosives factory that operated until 1973. The former mining settlement and its facilities can thus be placed in the broader context of industrial use over time, without conflating the different periods. Check the route’s current visiting conditions locally.
The Ruta de los Molinos del Río Odiel
The Ruta de los Molinos del Río Odiel offers another perspective. This walking route connects historic watermills with the geology of Calañas’s mining landscape. It follows the Río Odiel upstream from Sotiel Coronada to the Revuelta de la Llave. Along the river are grain mills belonging to the Villa de Calañas, powered for hundreds of years by the waters of the Río Odiel.
The focus of the two routes therefore differs: La Torera centres on the former mining settlement and its facilities, while the Ruta de los Molinos focuses on the riverside mills and the geology of the landscape. Check the visiting conditions for each route locally.
Fandangos and Festival Traditions
The Fandangos de Calañas are part of the town’s cultural heritage. They are included in the ethnological activity “El Fandango en la provincia de Huelva,” which is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC); the protection was established by an Andalusian decree in 2020. There are two local forms: one is usually performed by a chorus and is better suited to dancing, while the other is slower and intended for solo singing. Both are accompanied by guitar. The comparison makes clear that the name Fandangos here encompasses different styles of performance.
Calañas’s most important festival is the Romería de Ntra. Sra. de la Coronada. The traditional sequence of festivities begins on Easter Sunday and ends two Sundays later, after 14 days of festivities. On Easter Monday, the pilgrimage route leads from Calañas to the shrine in Sotiel Coronada, about eight kilometres away. As the annual programme may vary, check the dates for your travel year in advance.
Ermita de los Santos Mártires
The grounds of the Ermita de los Santos Mártires have been opened to visitors and have public toilets. The Ermita was restored as a centre for tourist interpretation and cultural exhibitions in Calañas and inaugurated on 23 May 2024. Check current opening hours before visiting. The church, market hall, routes, Fandangos and festival traditions offer different reasons to include Calañas in your travel plans; which one matters most to you depends on whether you want to focus on architecture, industrial history, riverside landscapes or local culture.
