Get to know Alájar through two distinct highlights: the natural formation of the Peña de Arias Montano y Cuevas de Alájar and a cultural and historical heritage that ranges from pilgrimages and churches to the story of a humanist. Two hiking trails also offer their own distinctive experiences. These provide concrete starting points for considering the landscape and history side by side when planning your trip.

The Peña and its natural setting

The Peña de Arias Montano y Cuevas de Alájar is a large limestone mass that rises to 746 metres above the valley of the town of Alájar, ending in a plateau-like formation. Inside, water has formed caves with stalactites, stalagmites and lakes. The Peña is therefore notable both for its geological formation and its caves. Alájar is one of the municipalities in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park in the province of Huelva.

Pilgrimage and architectural history

The Santuario de la Reina de los Ángeles stands on the Peña. The original temple began as a small hermitage in the 14th or 15th century and was later expanded by Benito Arias Montano. Every year on 8 September, the Romería de la Reina de los Ángeles takes place there. In 1970, it was recognised as a festival of National Tourist Interest. If you are planning your trip around the Romería, check the event dates in advance.

The parish church, Iglesia de San Marcos, tells a different architectural story: it dates from the late 16th century, was affected by the Lisbon earthquake and was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century. In El Calabacino stands the Ermita de la Santísima Trinidad, built in 1749. In Los Madroñeros is the small Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Salud, dating from 1843. These places offer different points of historical interest, from the older hermitage to buildings from the 19th century.

Cultural sites and hiking trails

The Centro de Interpretación Benito Arias Montano explores the life and work of the 16th-century humanist Benito Arias Montano. It is located in the area of the business premises on the Peña de Arias Montano y Cuevas de Alájar. The historic complex of Alájar includes both the main settlement of the municipality and the Peña, bringing the history of the town and the cultural history of the Peña together as a shared theme.

The Los Molinos hiking trail runs for much of its length alongside the Rivera de Alájar and passes the remains of former grain mills. The circular Sendero Alájar, la Peña y sus aldeas takes a different route: it starts and ends in Alájar and climbs up to the Peña de Arias Montano y Cuevas de Alájar. The two trails therefore offer distinct reasons to choose one over the other: a route alongside the water and mill remains, or a circular hike from Alájar up to the Peña.

Choose the focus of your stay

When looking for a hotel in Alájar, you can first consider whether you would like your stay to focus more on religious and architectural history or on geology and hiking trails. Both are represented by specific places and themes in the municipality, giving your trip a clear direction.
