Aracena combines a protected historic townscape with a fortress, a cave open to visitors and hiking trails through varied landscapes. When planning your trip, you can focus on different themes: local history and museums, a visit to the Gruta de las Maravillas, or time on the hiking trails.

Townscape and history

The urban fabric of Aracena is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The townscape includes traditional limestone paving, squares and manor houses, as well as numerous fountains and public washhouses. These features make the town itself an important part of its cultural offerings, alongside individual museums and attractions.

The Castillo Fortaleza fortress was built in the mid-13th century. Archaeological work at the Castillo documented Islamic houses that existed before the castle was built. Both the earlier buildings and the later fortress are therefore part of the history of this place.

The Castillo Fortaleza can be reached via Calle Virgen del Mayor Dolor or by footpaths from the Gruta de las Maravillas. Routes and conditions may change, so check the latest access information before your visit.

Fortress, cave and museums

The Gruta de las Maravillas opened to the public in 1914, making it one of Spain’s first tourist caves. It extends for a total of 2,130 metres of galleries, of which 1,200 metres are open to visitors. Expansive underground lakes and numerous varied formations define the cave. As the visitor route may change, check the visiting conditions in advance.

The Museo del Jamón y del Cerdo Ibérico serves as an interpretation centre for the Iberian pig and presents its exhibits across seven galleries. Topics range from raising the animals and their lives in the Dehesa to their diet. Traditional and industrial slaughter, as well as the curing and storage of products in the cellar, are also covered. The museum visit therefore encompasses not just the finished product, but various stages of its production.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo al Aire Libre “Andalucía” offers a different way to experience art. This open-air sculpture museum is set up in the streets of the town. It complements the historic architecture with contemporary art in public spaces.

Hiking trails and landscapes

On the slopes of Cerro del Castillo, hiking trails offer opportunities for geological observation, a botanical educational trail and views of the landscape. Four selected hiking routes begin and end in the centre of Aracena. They pass through varied landscapes: orchards, Dehesa, meadows, chestnut groves and riverside areas.

A hiking trail can be followed on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between the type of outing and the different landscape experiences. Trail conditions may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

Rehiletes and Feria del JamĂłn

The Rehiletes tradition takes place every year on 7 December, when fires light up Aracena’s individual neighbourhoods. If you include this date in your travel plans, check the information about the programme, as details may change.

The Feria del JamĂłn features ham-carving demonstrations, the traditional butchering of a pig, tastings of home-cured products and live cooking demonstrations. If you would like to include the Feria in your plans, check the announced dates and programme details. This allows you to distinguish these offerings from the attractions and hiking trails described as available year-round.
