Guájar-Fondón is the most inland of the three Guájares; ravines shape this landscape. The landscape, a fortified settlement, and the history of the parish church of San Antonio de Padua give a stay different points of focus.
Landscape and location
Together with Guájar-Alto and Guájar-Faragüit, Guájar-Fondón belongs to the municipality of Los Guájares. Along with the Sierra de Lújar, the Sierra of the same name forms the first mountain range on the way to the southwestern side of the Sierra Nevada. Of the three Guájares, Guájar-Fondón lies furthest inland. The village is on the right bank of the Río de la Toba.
Traditional white houses, balconies, and courtyards with plants and flowers characterize the architecture. Mountains and natural landscapes surround the village. Hiking and birdwatching are nature-focused options to consider when planning a trip, complementing the village architecture and history.
Trails through the three Guájares
The “Los tres Guájares” route follows paths along the Río Toba through Guájar Faragüit, Guájar Fondón, and Guájar Alto. It focuses on the route through all three villages, offering a different approach to a visit centered on a single building.
El Castillejo can also be reached via a route that starts in the upper part of Guájar-Fondón. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
El Castillejo and the history of the church
El Castillejo is an Andalusian fortified settlement on a steep hill. It stands on a rugged limestone crag on the right bank of the Río Toba, at an altitude of 405 metres. Both the line of the walls and large parts of the inner layout are visible. For a visit to this heritage site, the preserved layout is as defining an aspect as the location of the settlement itself.
The parish of San Antonio de Padua is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. The church was built in the Mudéjar style over a former mosque. After a fire during the Morisco revolts, it was rebuilt in the early 17th century. The church and the fortified settlement are two distinct points of interest if you are interested in the history of the buildings and the village.
Festivals and getting around
The patron saint festivals in honour of the Virgen de la Aurora take place on the first weekend of August. Specific programme dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festivities, check the announced dates for the year in question.
The GR5 route, part of the Andalucía Rural Conectada programme, runs from Guájar Alto via Guájar Faragüit and Guájar-Fondón to Motril.
