The municipality of Gor lies in the Sierra de Baza Natural Park. Visitors can explore several themes with distinct character: a clearly defined hiking trail to old mines, a longer cycling route between Baza and Gor, and archaeological and historical remains. There are also set dates in the festival calendar. You can get to know Gor through outdoor activities, cultural history or local traditions.

Hiking and cycling

The linear Minas de la Cruz hiking trail is 1,261 metres long, takes about 20 minutes and is rated as easy. It ends at the old Minas de la Cruz mines and at a reconstruction of the mining headframe that once stood there. The section along the forest track is partly accessible by bicycle. These details make the trail a clearly defined short hike; for visitors interested in mining history, its endpoint provides a distinct thematic focus.

A 55.9-kilometre cycling route runs through the western part of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park, connecting the town of Baza with the village of Gor. It ends in the centre of Gor, at the Fuente de los Siete Caños beside the washhouse. Compared with the 1,261-metre hiking trail, the cycling route is considerably longer; an approximate walking time of 20 minutes is also given for the footpath. This gives you the choice between a short hike and a longer cycling connection.

Archaeological remains and local history

Las Angosturas is an important archaeological site in the municipality of Gor. It contains Iberian, Byzantine and Arab remains. A burial site dating to around 2300 BC, with a rich and extensive collection of grave goods, is also located at Las Angosturas. The burial site therefore reaches far back into prehistory, while the other remains represent later cultural periods.

Gor Castle adds a link to the area’s history of former rulers. It was the residence of the Duke of Gor, the lord of the town, and features three towers and remains of its walls. The two sites offer different historical perspectives: Las Angosturas is notable for its archaeological finds and a burial site, while the castle was once the seat of a ruler.

Festivals throughout the year

The patron saint festivities in honour of San Cayetano take place from 6 to 10 August, inclusive. The municipality describes the Encierros de Gor as one of Spain’s oldest bull runs and dates them back to 1622. San Blas is traditionally celebrated on 3 February. The festivities include a vigil for the saint on the eve of the feast day, a procession to the Triana district and a Holy Mass.

The dates differ for travel planning: the San Cayetano celebrations span five days, while the San Blas festivities also include a vigil on the eve of the feast day.
