At the Falla de Nigüelas, the fault plane, its inclination and the extent of the displacement are clearly visible, offering a tangible insight into the local geology. Nigüelas combines this natural feature with Mudéjar art, historic buildings, gardens and cultural events. You can plan your stay around the landscape, architecture or cultural calendar.

Geology and Landscape

The Falla de Nigüelas Natural Monument is a geological protected site in Nigüelas and is part of both the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and the Sierra Nevada SAC and SPA. At the fault, the fault plane, its inclination and the extent of the displacement are clearly visible. These features bring the geological character to life: the focus is on a visible structure, not just its designation as a natural monument.

There are information panels at the fault. As their condition may change, it is worth checking before your visit. The Mirador de Rasuela offers excellent views of the Valle de Lecrín, the Sierra Nevada and the deep gorge of the Río Torrente. From the fault, the focus is on geological features; from the viewpoint, it is on the valley, mountains and gorge.

Art, Architecture and Gardens

The Mudéjar church of San Juan Bautista contains magnificent sculptures from Granada’s religious art tradition. The parish church of Nigüelas dates from the 16th century. The Casa de los Zayas has a Renaissance portal and gardens in the French Romantic style. Each place has its own distinctive features: religious artworks, a historic date, and a portal and gardens with clearly defined characteristics.

The Jardín de los Muller is next to the Palacio de los Zayas and combines an orchard with a garden. Together with the gardens of the Casa de los Zayas, it offers a clear comparison: the latter are described as being in the French Romantic style, while the Jardín de los Muller combines an orchard and a garden. Those interested in garden design can take inspiration from these two distinct descriptions.

The town’s heritage also includes its former use as an olive mill: the Almazara de Las Laerillas is a former olive mill that can be visited. Check local opening arrangements before your visit.

Festivals and Music

The patron saint festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias take place in the third week of September. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the local annual programme. Several music competitions and concerts are also held in the town throughout the year; individual programmes may vary. For decades, the Entierro de la Zorra has been maintained as the finale and highlight of the festivities. Festival dates, music and traditions can each provide a starting point for planning your trip.
