Soportújar can be explored through several distinct themes: traditional Tinaos shape the townscape, while witch figures and stories add another thematic layer. There is also a church with a history of earlier use, a viewpoint overlooking neighboring towns, and typical dishes. When planning your visit, you can therefore decide whether to focus on architecture, figures in the streets, a climb, or the Feria in August.

Tinaos and Local History

Traditional Alpujarran Tinaos—covered porches or passageways—can be found throughout the town. As a recurring architectural form, they are a prominent feature. The town center is grouped around a 16th-century church that was formerly a mosque. This reveals two distinct aspects of the area’s architectural and historical use: the traditional Tinao design and the building’s earlier religious use. Those interested in architecture can therefore explore Soportújar beyond its witch figures.

Fountains, Viewpoint and Witch Figures

From Plaza de Abastos, take Calle Estación to Fuente del Dragón. According to local tradition, the water is said to have aphrodisiac properties and to influence fertility; the fountain is also part of the town’s storytelling tradition. From Mirador de Soportújar, you can see the natural surroundings and neighboring towns such as Carataunas and Cáñar. At the fountain there, statues of an experienced witch and her apprentice stand beside a large cauldron. Soportújar’s streets are also an attraction in their own right, featuring figures of witches, goblins, elves, sorceresses and dragons. A replica of Baba Yaga’s house stands at a corner in the upper part of town. Street installations may be maintained, so if you want to see a particular motif, it is advisable to check its current status before your visit.

Meditation, Walking Route and Cuisine

Another thematic highlight is the Osel Ling Buddhist meditation center. Located at an altitude of 1,600 meters, it is dedicated to meditation in seclusion. One specific outdoor option is the traditional route that climbs from the town over terraces and small farmsteads to the forest road near Casa Forestal de Soportújar. The forest road can be reached in under an hour. This time estimate applies to the route to that destination; allow extra time for breaks or further stretches.

Typical dishes in Soportújar include Puchero de hinojos, Plato alpujarreño, Migas, Fritá de verduras and Gachas. Alongside architecture and landscape, local cuisine is therefore another aspect to consider when choosing what to do during your stay. The Feria del Embrujo takes place every year in August. Its program includes activities, music, poetry, theater and circus; the Noche de las Brujas features performances, Queimada and music. If you are planning your trip around one of these events, check the dates and program for that year, as details may vary.
